To me, the upside of picking up RGIII's 5th year option outweighs any negatives. I also find it difficult to believe that the Skins want to trade him. He's only 24 years old and he's a bright guy. There is time for him to work on his skills and become intimately familiar with this specific offense. Then he can regain his job and reach his full potential.

I agree. Right now RGIII will not offer much in trade. Might as well keep him one more year and hope he wakes up.
Colt and Kirk are both career backups. Any talk of riding either of them as the starter next year is foolish.
Agree with everything you said! But the franchise sees it differently from what we can tell. Redskins Park already leaked story that RG will be gone after this season, and it's hard to see anybody backtracking from that once it's out there.
It appears the bosses either expect to start McCoy/Cousins next year or find a starter in FA/draft.
Pretty plain it's coming from Gruden. Like some former coaches/players/GMs have said, as a coach you don't dump on the franchise QB the way Gruden did. Can't think of any HC who's handled it this way and gone on to be successful with same QB???

They still have major salary cap problems. RG3 gets close to $7 million. There are several players contracts that dramatically increase next year.
Trent + $ 4 million*
Ryan K + 4.5 million*
DeSean Jackson + $5 million*
Bowen + $5 million*
* ballpark estimates / they are close
They have several players that will get $1- $2.5 million more next year..... and they continue to pay Morgan, Fletcher, and Carriker

Yea but if he suxxorz again next year his value/trade value is even less.
I'd rather just cut to the chase vs another year of drama/game game losses.

Plus, even if we pick up the 5th-year option, we can still release Griffin before the new league year begins in March of 2016 and not owe him anything. It's only when the 2016 league year starts that the option salary becomes guaranteed.

Apparently, I believe there is more upside to RGIII than you do. He's so young, so talented, so bright, and so new to the WCO, I just couldn't cut him.
There won't be any drama if RGIII doesn't start until Jay Gruden thinks he is truly ready. Of course, I'm hoping that Jay has taken control of that decision.
Look, Jay has a big mouth. He has said things about RGIII that he probably shouldn't have said publicly. Now, they just need to establish a good working relationship out of the public eye and work together to get RGIII ready to start sometime in the future.
We should forget trade value. The Skins can never recoup the value they paid for RGIII and one 3rd Round pick isn't going to make or break the team. Having a competent RGIII sometime down the line and for years to come could turn us into perennial contenders.
I'm hoping that Skins management doesn't over-react to anything that has transpired between RGIII and management and throw away the opportunity to try to develop him into a franchise QB.

Pick up the option and trade him, that's what I suspect will happen. Or work with the other team on an extension and trade him.
Either way, I don't see him staying here in 2015. Unfortunately

I hope the plan isnt colt/kirk for next season. Need to bring in another QB to compete if thats the case.
I have slightly more hope with Kirk/Colt over Rex/Becks...but not much

Unbelievable. We trade a buttload of picks for a guy who can't even make it through his rookie contract.
This is a serious indictment of both player and franchise.
