JoeRedskin 10-20-2014, 11:08 AM He doesn't want to sign for a cheap deal, just like he didn't want to get the franchise tag. IMO if he indeed tore another pec there is no chance he gets any sort of long term deal. He is setting him self up for another one year prove it deal, thankfully it won't be here.
Rak has not produced sacks as would be hoped or expected and is not elite. On the other hand, I am not "thankful" that it looks like a solid player will be moving on in the prime of his career. If it weren't for salary issues/expectations, Rak would be seen as a solid, but not spectacular, contributor to the defense.
If Rak were a former 7th round pick, we would be hoping to hold onto him at a reasonable price. I suspect that, just like D-Hall, Rak's absence will be felt beyond his immediate production.

Rak may not be elite, but I'm sure having him on the other side of Kerrigan has helped Kerrigan in his production. As you said in your previous post, not the worst decision int he world to keep him around this year. I'm fine with him walking out, since someone will likely overpay him.

I don't buy the arguement that he absence will make a huge impact on our defense. The year we lost him in 2012 in game 2 to another peck muscle tear our team went on a nice run and won the division. His loss hurt more in the short term than it did over the course of the season.
I was expecting Rak to be putting up some big numbers this year based on the addition of pass rushing specialist Coach Baker coming into the fold. We have seen his presence make an impact on Kerrigan, but Rak is still the same dude.
It will be interesting to see what they do moving forward... Rob Jackson is still unsigned. And I hate to say it but Rob would have made the play last week in the ARI game

I guess we won't know until he's out. I mean, some people don't think much of D. Hall and we're hurting bad in passing defense now that he's out.
skinsfan69 10-20-2014, 01:04 PM Time to move on for both sides. Good dude and all but he's just not the difference maker we need him to be.
calia 10-20-2014, 01:24 PM I don't see why we couldn't replicate with Rak what was recently done with DHall. Let Rak test the open market -- he won't find big money with his combination of injury history and lack of production (stats-wise, at least) this season, and I wouldn't mind at all having him back but for a lot less money. If he comes in on a one year deal and tears it up (on the field I mean, not another pec), then we can consider something longer term. But I think he is surely better than anyone else we can plug in right now who is already on the squad or that we can pick up without spending a lot of $, and I would rather see that spent on O-Line and safety help where we are by far more thin. And if he isn't willing to come down money-wise, then we part ways and wish him well. I think the guy has not lived up to expectations, but I don't question his heart (his brains, maybe, for not realizing or pursing any move to the QB other than a bull rush).
DynamiteRave 10-20-2014, 01:25 PM Just read that Orakpo's pec injury is most likely a season ender. Surprise surprise.
JoeRedskin 10-20-2014, 01:38 PM At the end of the year, put a reasonable multi-year offer in front of him. (not sure what the number might be but certainly, 2nd tier DE money). If he takes it, great. If not, see ya.
I don't mind having him back. I do mind the constant "Should we have him back" debate. Decide what he's worth to the team over the next 4 years, put the offer out there, if he can do better, good for him.
Torn, in my eyes, sadly he's done here

Realistically, the Redskins already have players on the team (even if it's by committee) that can come in and provide the same quality of play as Orakpo for much less than what we'd have to offer Brian to stay - even at a discount.
Cut him loose, wish him well, and allocate those funds toward keeping Ryan Kerrigan.
