Lotus 09-11-2014, 10:30 AM I'm not going to try to pick any games yet because anything could happen with this team. They have enough talent to beat just about anybody but they also can blow any game due to their propensity to make egregious mistakes.
In the Houston game, the Redskins looked sickeningly like the 2013 team. I'm hoping to see a new, improved 2014 Redskins team soon but I'm not counting on it.
I tend to be optimistic about the Skins but they are going to have prove themselves to me this time around. I'm just sick and tired of losing games we could have won because we committed multiple turnovers. Before you ask me how I can be so negative after just one game, let me explain that I view the Houston loss as simply an extension of the poor play that cost us dearly in 2013. To me, this team is no better than the 2013 team until they can fix the problems that killed us last season.
The defense appears to be better than last year...when coverages aren't being blown.
BTW that blown coverage appears to have been from DHall. He was on the wrong side of the field and didn't cover anyone on the play.
KI Skins Fan 09-11-2014, 10:46 AM I really don't see how you compare last year's team with last week's game. (
Last week's game is directly comparable to last season. Does any of the following sound familiar?
2013 Game 1 Phil - After a poor kick return, Washington found themselves backed up in their own end, and Griffin and Morris exchanged a poor option pitch, and Morris fumbled in the end zone, forced to fall on it and giving Philadelphia a safety.
2014 - Turnover on botched handoff vs Houston hurts us in Red Zone.
2013 Game 4 Oakland - Sav Rocca's punt was blocked by Raiders unning back Rashad Jennings and recovered by fellow Raiders running back Jeremy Stewart in the end zone for a Raiders touchdown and a 7–0 lead.
2014 - Houston scores on blocked punt return to take 7-0 lead over Skins.
It couldn't get much more comparable than these examples.

I completely agree. Was Bad News Bears stuff last week. You could make a highlight reel with circus music voice over from almost each and every game we played last year and this. Lets not forget the tackle we made on our own player (Roberts) on the punt return. Thank God it was week one and at the moment there is a relatively small sample of football follies footage provided by the Redskins. The season is very young- still plenty o time to turn it around.

meh, I could go to multiple teams that had fumbles, or blocked punts. But to look at those two singular comparisons and say this team= 2013 team is to ignore 58 minutes of other plays. As I said, last year's team couldn't/wouldn't tackle for anything. In one outing this season, the team showed more tackling savvy then all last year (and yes they still blew it on the 71yd TD). It's something a new coach can build on, and hopefully change.

It was 14-6 when that happened.
Bucket 09-11-2014, 12:38 PM Okay.. I'm sure the Jags will try to adapt what the Texans did on defense this week and I'm hoping they do. One thing we didn't do enough of against the Texans was run 7-9 yard hitches and comebacks. With PG and DJ, those routes should totally destroy defenses who want to play cushion against us because they are so effective after the catch.
I really feel like our offense is going to start coming together. Especially when RG3 takes off the training wheels for being a pocket QB and just starts balling again.
Also, the Jags run a 4-3? The stretch should be very effective, and bootlegs this week.
Lotus 09-11-2014, 01:10 PM It was 7-6 Texans when the punt was blocked. The TD made it 14-6.

The point is: Turnovers killed us. They always do. We are not good enough to overcome them. The number of turnovers must be reduced. The worst type of turnovers (punt blocks, Red Zone fumbles, etc.) must be virtually eliminated.
Turnovers don't just happen randomly to all teams. The Redskins can greatly reduce them. For example, as Niles Paul broke free, he could have wrapped both arms around the ball to ensure that we kept possession. His catch was at a critical point in the game when he needed to protect the ball. Fate didn't intervene; he just had a brain fart and ****ed up.

Preach bro. I hope Gruden is screaming the same thing this week.

OK, you guys caught me on that detail. My point is don't have a brain fart and let your man block a punt - ever. If a player who is making a good effort gets beat, I can accept that. It happens sometimes. But when a player gets beat because he is "out to lunch", as Gruden put it, that is unacceptable. That looked a lot like 2013 revisited to me.
