Love the potential for Ihenacho.. But I'm hoping he's not another Rambo.. As Lotus mentioned, his weakness seems to be coverage, I guess that works okay if we use him at strong safety.

Here's stuff from Denver:

Ihenacho seemed to be on the losing end, any time a ball was thrown his way. If there was a key first down, or TD, it seemed to come at his expense. As much as Ihenacho thrives in the box, close to the line of scrimmage, he’s a liability in coverage.... Per ProFootballFocus, Ihenacho earned a -6.9 overall grade and a pitiful -6.3 in pass coverage last year, as he started 18 of the Broncos 19 games, including playoffs.

At first glance I thought his number was 73 and that we had brought in another offensive lineman. Then I looked at the numbers on his shoulder and was like 'oh 33.' From that angle he kind of looked the part of a tackle.

Lol, back in the 80's safeties who could play in the box as a 4th or 5th linebacker like Laron Landry were practically future hall of famers, and guys like Nacho and Rambo were usually early draft picks that were safe bets to go to a pro bowl or two. These days they're considered bubble players and drafted either late or not at all.

On the coverage front though there is this:
In the 2013 offseason, Ihenacho began turning heads, showing very good cover skills and run stopping abilities. In the first released depth chart, Ihenacho climbed all the way to the number two spot for strong safety, pushing Mike Adams for the starting job. In the Broncos' first 2013 preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers, Ihenacho was in with the starters and led the team with 7 tackles, one being for a loss, and also had a forced fumble, which Rahim Moore recovered.

Then again thats just an excerpt from his wiki page without a specific source being cited.

A player on the waiver wire is not going to be a team savior, but focus on the positive here. This dude can tackle and he takes strong angles. If you remember our defense last year, a sound tackler is an upgrade.

If he's in the game we'd want to try to use Clark as the FS. Normally the FS and SS are interchangeable in our scheme but I'm sure Haslett can figure out how to tweak it and cover for his deficiencies.

But honestly I'd let Rambo have a shot here anyway. If he's improved like we think, Ryan Fitzpatrick and an older Andre Johnson are a good way to ease into things.

With Meriweather suspended and Thomas hurt we needed a SS. We weren't going to get an All-Pro off the cut list. Ihenacho is a former starter and he is also a good ST player. I'm pleased with this pickup and I'm looking forward to seeing him play.

Here's stuff from Denver:

when i see a secondary player with high tackle numbers, im worried they dont react/read plays well and are usually a step late to make a play on the ball but there for the tackle.

i am very happy we signed this guy but what we need is a sideline-to-sideline FS which i think, in the current passing NFL, is now one of the most important positions on either side of the ball.

i fear a lot of our d schemes are going to be hog-tied bc our corners are going to need help on top but our safeties arent very good to begin with so are we going to play tampa 2 all day? i guarantee the side of the field w/out safety help is the side of the field that will be picked on and repeatedly abused.

Re: the bolded, that's more a function of a front 7 not doing its job than anything else.

Hey Schneed, I know I oughta ask in a better thread, but I looked at Overthecap.com and we had like 200K over. Any ideas on where we stand now that rule of 51 is not in effect?

That's what I'm thinking! Now that we have a Duke and a Rambo in our secondary, If few can sign a Clint and a Rock we'll be set. It's all about the tough guy names.
