Here is wishful thinking:
I have seen on some recent Mock Drafts that Texas LB Derrick Johnson may be available when we pick 9th. Doubtful, but it could happen.
If so, we should not hesitate to draft DJ.
DJ is one of the few blue chip-can't miss top talents in this draft; ala Sean Taylor and Lavar Arrington were in their draft class.
DJ is rated one of the top 3-5 players (talent wise) in this draft. However since DJ plays LB and some moronic teams (like SF this year) insist on picking weak QB's early, he may drop a few spots.
Last year Sean Taylor was rated top 3 talent wise in his draft class, but dropped a few spots because he plays safety and Phillip Rivers was drafted way too high.
These are the kinds of bargains/steals you look for at the top of the first round, even though LB might not be our biggest need. This guy would be a steal at #9.

then what? move washington inside? the problem is OLB is the last thing we need right now, and i'm not sure he'll be ready to move to MLB with such a short time to transition (if he's even able to)...

I'd put him in the "great player, but not for us" category...

DJ played OLB and MLB at Texas. He has experience at MLB position.

I was just going to post a thread about Derick Johnson. It says on his analysis on ESPN.com that he will be moved to the middle in the pros becuase of his size and ability to stop the run up the middle. Id rather us get Rolle, i think corner is a much bigger need for us, with how old our corners are. But he could play middle for us and would make our linebacking corp dominate.

The #1 concern is we get a player or players in the draft that will make an impact

i read that we may need depth at lb, we may be moving marshall inside and barrow just might be done. He would be a great investment but i see washington and arrington to play for years to come. If he could play mlb within 1-2 years i would actually want him but if not then we just need to understand that even though he maybe the surest thing in the draft we just don't have a need for him...... and we should be thankfull for that!

I'm with Hansbrouck, you can't pass on DJ if he's there. Pierce was an OLB that we converted and that seemed to turn out pretty well. I think DJ is considerably better than any linebacker we might get later in the draft, while I'm not sure that Pac Man Jones is that much better than any corner we'd get later on. I just think it's easier to find corners than lbs.

But this year's draft is pretty deep, so hopefully we'll get someone to make an impact

Not sure if this is the forum to state this in, but I was watching some highlights of Mike Williams and his stock lowered GREATLY for me. If anyone hasn't really seen any of his highlights, I would suggest you do.

He has a hard time shedding blocks especially being as big as he is. He didn't run tight routes and just didn't seem all too explosive.

Before I get the obvious incoming criticism on this evaluation, I may not have seen the "circus" catches that's he has undoubtedly made. I will say that when I saw the way he plays, it just doesn't seem like he was very fundamentally sound.

Personally, if we were to go WR, I would go Edwards. After being sorely disappointed with Williams "highlights", I decided to check out Edwards and was thoroughly impressed. I think it would be a gamble because of his dropping problems in college, but if that was corrected, I see him as being the biggest playmaker at WR.

Actually I was about to start a thread about that very thing, I agree Williams is not the player he is defiently overhyped, there are plenty of recievers in this draft who if they played for USC would be talked about in the top 10, that offense can make you look much better than you really are. I still say we do what we have to do to pick up a 2nd rd pick and get V. Jackson, this kid will be better than Williams, if we do what we have to do to move into the early second rd and keep our #9 then I feel we will be much better off with the best CB available [ preferably Rolle]or Merriman, I have a strong feeling that Merriman will be he guy, but we can't trade down to get him, where as if we trade down and pick up a second rounder, we could get a very good CB and Jackson, Jackson IMO is the big key to us having great success in this draft.

No way we need a LB at #9, when Williams has shown he can tap the talent off a cast off and turn him into a pro bowler, he doesn't need another star at LB, especially at the expence of much more needed help at other positions.
