Apparently he ran faster (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft05/news/story?id=2026922) but not by much. Seriously though, I'd take this guy in the 4rd round if he isn't picked up by then. Perhaps it's because I feel sorry for the guy. I wonder how fast he was in college.

I agree this kid may not be an olympian but he's a football player, I don't care what he's running the 40 in he will be a very good back for whoever takes him.
walter payton, barry sanders and emmit smith ran in the 4.5-4.6 range.
speed isnt the most important thing. those guys have heart.
clarett is a crybaby with no fight inside of him. He is only putting on the "good guy" show because its finacially rewarding.
the guy could be a good pro, but mostlikely he is going to be a problem for the team that drafts him.

I wouldn't even waste a seventh rounder on him. I'd say he has character issues, but I don't know if that's possible for someone who simply has no character at all. The guy is just a total train wreck. So far he's shown that he is an injury-prone former high school standout with sub-par speed and a poor work ethic who couldn't make it through a single college season without missing about 25% of the games and then subsequently getting suspended by his team. Nothing about him appeals to me.

Remember Emmitt Smith was not very fast, but damn was he elusive to tackle in the open field. I like to see how agile he is before I would waste a pick on him.

This guy is a marginal athlete with a questionable attitude and no integrity.
All he has right now is name recognition. We could do better.

The Emmitt Smith comparison is bothersome. Emmitt had two very good years of college football, and didn't show any drop-off in skill. Though some were surprised by his selection as early as it was, everyone thought he'd be a good pro (maybe not the career leader, but...).
Clarett, by any measure, had a fantastic freshman year. However, he showed what most teams would call "character issues" - not by attempting to leave early, but by burning every available bridge in doing so. He has also shown a physical dropoff, or at the very least inconsistency, in his workouts and appearances since leaving THE Ohio State.
I believe that Clarett, at his peak, is probably a top ten NFL-caliber Running Back talent. Since he is unable to motivate himself to that peak with his livelihood on the line, it would be foolish to think that a coaching staff - even a very good one - will do it for him.
The road to NFL greatness is littered with superstar talent that couldn't put it all together. Maurice Clarett is probably headed to that path, to break bread with the Lawrence Phillipses and Jeff Georges whose talent wasn't enough to overcome the mental or emotional obstacles they bring to the table.

Hey folks; look on the bright side here. Maybe he only shaved 0.05 seconds off his really slow time in the 40, but you have to keep this in mind:
He didn't quit and walk out of this workout like he did at the combine. Not even once...
Draw all the comparisons to Emmitt Smith that you want. Smith's records and achievements in the NFL are in no danger from Maurice Clarett.
