I would have rather made him test the market. We have too many holes to fill.

Needs to work on a 2nd & possible 3rd pass rush move.

I like Rak, but he's not worth 11 mil. I put him on the Cliff Anvril level and he's currently being paid 8mil/yr in Seattle.

Put this in perspective:

2012- Orakpo is out all but 2 games and we win the division with improved defense from mid point till end.

2013- Orakpo is in entire season and our defense ranks one of worst in NFL, and team goes 3-13.

SO Rak is a bad luck charm?

Way to many factors that are the difference between the W/L record of 2012 and 2013.

2012 the offense led the team. Defense was still bad. RG III was incredible in unleashing the R/O on the NFL and Fletch was stellar in the second half of the year.

2013 all three phases of the Redskins game were flawed. This past year it was a mess all around, Fletch showed his age. The young guys in the secondary played that way. Wilson was AWFUL. Rak, Kerrigan, and DHall were the lone bright spots on a terribe defense.

So comparing 2012 - 2013 isn't even closing to comparing apples to apples with Rak being the only difference in the two.

I don't think it's fair to place the fortunes of an entire defense on one guy, good or bad. I would love to have Rak back at between 8-10 mil per year, but both sides knew that wouldn't happen right now. Overpaying big name free agents is a way of life for shitty NFL teams (like us) looking to jump start their offseason, all it takes is one team to offer him a 5 year 60 mil deal with 30 mil guaranteed for him to bolt town on the next flight. In today's market where top shelf players are rare it's practically an inevitability when one does reach the market. I guarantee if he left and we were stuck with someone like Rob Jackson starting the whole year fans would've been crying about why we didn't pay up. If Rob Jackson was good enough to start our coaches would find ways to get him on the field more, instead of just as a stopgap when starters need to catch their breath.

Yea blaming one player seems asinine. I would agree Rak and Dhall were the studs last year, not so much Kerrigan just because he completely disappeared (which he always seems to do), even more so than Orakpo has in his past. They both aren't great but a one year deal is worth it.

I'm OK with the $11.5M cap number. It's not ideal, but hopefully this is a means to an end when it comes to getting him to sign a longer term deal which will reduce the cap number.

Still, elite pass rushers are impossible to find. And yes, 10 sacks is elite when you're a 3-4 OLB and not rushing every down.
