Alvin Walton 05-07-2014, 10:18 AM To me it's impossible for anyone to judge a guy off of 4 starts. He's done a lot of good things in those starts. Actually he almost had 400 against Atl. But he's shown a quick release, good footwork, and good deep ball. He's also done some things ( throw late and behind) that I would expect from a young QB. I do think the organization (and the fans) are assuming Griffin is going to be a great QB. I'm just not sold on that yet.
1. Griffin needs to show he can protect himself and stop playing reckless.
2. Show he can run a pro offense and stop doing the back peddle when his first read is covered
3. Show that his knees can hold up for a full season
If Cousins is traded, which I would expect to happen, then McCoy is the back-up. That's not good enough for a team that has high expectations.
Don't all teams have high expectations?
Alvin Walton 05-07-2014, 10:20 AM So, would learning a new offense be a valid excuse for RGIII, according to you guys, if he doesn't perform well this season? My guess is "No".
My recollection of JC was that he could look good at times between the 20's but he was not good in the Red Zone or in converting third down plays.
I don't understand why this argument about JC goes on and on. There ought to be a statute of limitations on it. If the guy could play, wouldn't he be a starter somewhere by now? Again, he is a Coach Killer.
Agreed, Campbell is no starter. Gibb's reached big time when we drafted him.
He's a total spaz in the pocket.
At this point I don't see a huge difference in Cousins vs McCoy.
If either have them have to play for an extended amount of time, chances are we're in trouble. As most teams are when your starter goes down for more than a game or two.

Exactly, a backup is just that. Most teams put their stock into the starter. It's a luxury to have 2 starting quality qbs, and if you have 2 good qbs you can usually trade one for early draft picks. Which is not the case with KC.

really, didn't the Redskins win a Superbowl with a backup QB ?
Sonny Jurgensen was a backup, Theismann was 3rd string.....the Redskins have had plenty of good back up QBs.

I expect a learning curve. I'm going to assume that Gruden will run plays from Shanahan's offense, just different terminology.
As far as Griffin goes, we have to all be patient. I don't think his instincts are to sit in the pocket and let things develop. He's going to have to learn and get comfortable with the offense.

True, I think the pressure here to win is higher than a lot of other markets because of the fans base, media and owner.

Jurgensen didn't win the Super Bowl. He arguably also wasn't the backup in '72 - he got hurt and Kilmer took over.
Thiesmann was the unquestioned starter when we won the SB with him.
Rypien was the unquestioned starter when we won the SB.
Whether Williams or Schroeder was the backup when we won the SB in '87 is open to debate.

you prove my point, the Redskins have had success with backup QBs

Backups who became starters. Plus all of those guys were in the pre-free agency era. Different times.
