When did this become Riley vs Orackpo? Why can't we be happy and attempt to get both?
Riley is only one piece of the two we need in a 3/4. I feel like we need to go and and make a move for someone like Butler. If we don't make a move for someone with his skill set. We should be drafting Christian Jones from Florida State.
Philadelphia beat us because we lack the speed on defense. Dallas always abuses us with their TE's. We need athletic LB's in the middle to win the NFC East.
Yer darn tootin!

I think you're right we need both Riley and Orakpo. I also think you're right about Butler. He would be an excellent signing for our defense.
Where did this Riley or Orakpo stuff come from? Some sports blogger speculation? Well, they've got to produce copy, you know, even if it is nonsensical.
Highly likely Rak and Riley both return IMO.

We need to make it a priority to keep both. Riley is likely better than any FA we can get at that position. He's going to be known as one of the top LBs in the NFL soon.

Can't find the link yet. Got the text on my phone.

Started a new thread. Figured it was thread worthy. I know people are going to lose their shit over the price tag.

Not sure if I like giving him 4 years, but I am glad we resigned him. I remember last year many WP members were in favor of letting him go, and then he had a good season. Hopefully he continues to play well.
Your post IS factual. It is great to hear from someone that understands how to play LB. The majority of others only measure LB's by sacks, regardless of how bad a LB does not comply with his other positional responsibilities. Setting an edge against the run, containment, pass coverage, interceptions are just as important as sacks. What good is a sack or 10 if you are not holding your position down.
Orakpo is a one trick pony IMO (pass rush and only one pass rush move) and played well at the end of last season because he is playing for a contract. He has missed a TON of time due to injury and he got hurt again last season.
He is not worth a big salary cap hit. We can do better.
I am a former LB and watching Orakpo play is frustrating to watch because he has holes in his game. He is selfish. He goes for the sack rather than reading a play. Orakpo is not a good LB, he is a small DE playing LB. He does not have the mental ability to play LB.
The only argument GTripp has is pass rush and that is it.
As Seattle and SF (the two best teams in the by far) proved, is as much as the powers that be want the NFL to be a passing league, come playoffs and Superbowl, run the ball/be balanced and play lights out defense and you will win. Sacks and passing stats are the sexy stats and they sell newspapers, but running the ball and defense wins championships.
Given Dan Snyder's reputation as an NFL owner, the last thing we need to do is over pay for a player that has holes in his game. If we can Orakpo for cheap, great, keep him. Orakpo will not come for cheap. Let him walk.
Pretty much disagree with everything here.
-He's been consistently productive his entire career, not just in a contract year.
-He missed one season out of five due to injury.
-He's a better all around LB than some fans give him credit for and he's improved in coverage. He's also solid vs the run.
-If we don't lock him up there will be plenty of teams more than willing to get their hands on him long term.

Bad value. Orakpo is on a 3-13 team. This not the time for a team in this position to overpay an decent rush LB, his pass coverage may have improved but it was terrible
Let another team sign him, it's time to move on from this experiment, he's an undersized rush end.
He was injured the season before the year he missed, and in that previous year his pectoral was partially torn for half the year and was largely ineffective.
