backrow 01-17-2014, 08:50 AM That irks me, a lot.
Me too! I hate Jim Useless! Overall hire is only mediocre and is downgraded further because of this move. I see no SB championships in Grudens resume.
KI Skins Fan 01-17-2014, 08:57 AM Yeah, I can sense that they're holding off on a Haslett announcement because they know that it will be unpopular if he is retained as DC.
On the other hand, the favorite word of the media to describe the Redskins organization has been "dysfunctional". Contrary to that label, Bruce Allen and Jay Gruden are putting together an organization filled with people who have worked well together in the past. One of those people is Jim Haslett. Haslett has also been a mentor to Jay Gruden.
I say if JG wants JH on his coaching staff, so be it. Let Jay have the people he is most comfortable working with. From that point forward it is up to Jay to either make it work or to make any necessary changes.
Lotus 01-17-2014, 09:09 AM Well if that were the case Haslett would have been sent packing
I agree. And I wasn't picking on you with my comments.
Alvin Walton 01-17-2014, 09:36 AM Hi Jay!
Welcome to the Redskins!
I think you are a great coach.
I like what you are doing so far.
If you were the airline pilot for my first airplane ride my advice to you would be:
DONT F*CK UP THE LANDING!!!
KI Skins Fan 01-17-2014, 11:13 AM If Jim Haslett is retained as DC, what are we being asked to believe? That the historically bad defense he led somehow wasn't his fault?
If it wasn't his fault, I'd like to know why they think it wasn't his fault.
Was he prevented by Shanahan from doing what he wanted to do?
Or did he have bad position coaches?
Or did he have bad players?
Or was it a combination of the above with some injuries thrown in to the mix?
Now, the Redskins have announced that two of Haslett's position coaches have been retained, Including Raheem Morris who was the coach of the worst unit on that historically bad defense. And, to my knowledge, the Redskins haven't interviewed any candidates for the DC position, so I suppose Haslett will be retained unless Dan Snyder absolutely forbids it.
If Haslett is retained, it would be nice if the Redskins brain trust would tell us why they think the Redskins defense will be better in 2014 under the same leadership that produced an unmitigated disaster of a defense in 2013. That should be interesting.
The unresolved status of Jim Haslett is why I couldn't bring myself to whole-heartedly endorse the hiring of Jay Gruden. Getting the "old gang" back together might mean something to Bruce Allen and Jay Gruden but, as a fan, it means nothing to me. I just want the Redskins to win and I have good reason to be skeptical about Haslett being capable of helping us win.
Evilgrin 01-17-2014, 11:20 AM Very interesting, whoever becomes DC has all his position coaches in place. Would be a bit odd to bring someone from the outside in.
Some things we know about Haslett: he wasn't allowed to hire his own defensive staff prior to now, he was sometimes overruled by Shanahan on play calling, we haven't had a lot to work with recently especially in the secondary, he's probably not the greatest DC in the world but he's far from the worst.
Can the D improve under Haslett going forward by having better assistants around, better chemistry amongst the staff, and most of all by upgrading the talent? I think so.

I kinda feel where you're coming from. I wish they would've canned Haslett but it doesn't look like they're going to do so, but I've always liked Raheem Morris so I'm kinda glad they held onto him.
I feel like we were so bad at defense last year due to a mix of bad coaching (defensively), bad players and possibly Shanny being Shanny.
The secondary was a mess, Josh Wilson may as well have been a legless midget and we didn't have a true nickleback. EJ Biggers? Really? Couldn't do better than that huh? Then for some reason towards the end of the season it seemed like Amerson wasn't even playing. Since it seemed like it was always Hall and Wilson and you can't tell me Amerson couldn't beat out Wilson for #2, Wilson couldn't beat a moose out of the #2 position. Why not bump Amerson up, Shanny?
Really, I'd prefer Wade Phillips over Haz but... Looks like we're in it for another year.
Chico23231 01-17-2014, 11:57 AM Is it official we are staying 3-4?

I mean, Jay definitely said as much in his first press conference, but official? I mean it's not like you have to declare your base defense, it could change based on personnel and what not. But yeah, looks like thats what they are doing.
