Touche. Still find it ridiculous you think that makes him unqualified
A matter of principle. Same applies to Harbaugh, and I think the situation with Aldon Smith makes it clearer. Smith gets a DUI and Harbough can't really say anything other than it made him a better person when he did it. And I'm not kidding when I say Jay looks like a hard drinker. Kept wondering why his face is so puffy when he's not a fat guy. Coming from a fam of hard alcoholics that face is unmistakable.
But I don't think Gruden is a good candidate regardless. Several reasons. Still nothing on offense that's impressive (aside from an improvement over the Shanahans). No HC experience in the NFL, especially in a major market. It looks like a "fixed" hire with the Jay to Jon to Bruce connection.
Whisenhunt and Caldwell are better on the offensive side. Williams and Zimmer on the defensive side.

But you'd want Jon Gruden?

I don't think his example with a DUI is any better but I wondered if he's part of a fallback plan, asked earlier?

He's not. So let me get this straight. You don't like Jay because he hasn't been an HC in a major market and he was arrested once for drunk driving, but you're hoping hiring him must mean a more direct path to Jon, who was also once arrested?

I'm saying if the choice was limited to Grudens, I'd prefer Jon over Jay. Honestly I'd forgot Jon also had the DUI. If I remember right now it was one of the years Denver won a SB, something in an article I'd read mentioned both things.
But no, I dot want anyone named Gruden here. My paradigm based on what's available is:
Whisenhunt HC and whoever he picks for OC. GWilliams as DC and asst head coach. But I have no idea if Whisenhint would go for it.
Next option, replace Whisenhunt with Caldwell. Next, Williams HC. Last, Zimmer HC. I think every one of those guys has earned it far and above Jay Gruden, both on paper and on the field, leaving the potential for alcoholism aside.

Jay Gruden, Mike Zimmer are now free to interview | ProFootballTalk (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/01/05/jay-gruden-mike-zimmer-are-now-free-to-interview/)
Article and comments say a ton. I like Zimmer. A lot. The only reason Gruden is getting more attention is the name. Haven't we seen enough of the nepotism curse already? I hope through the interview process BA and/or Dan see Gruden is a bad choice.

Giving up on the running game and losing the lead in the 2nd half...sounds all too familiar.

I think Zimmer and Jay Gruden would both make fine coaches. My bigger concern is the staffs they would put together

I have wanted Zimmer dating back to our last coaching search. Do you think coaching under Marvin Lewis who is a defense oriented guy holds him back at all?

I don't know. I think Lewis lets Zimmer do his thing, as opposed to Carolina where most believe Rivera has his hands all over the defense so you wonder how much McDermott really contributes
