GTripp0012 12-17-2013, 05:00 PM If Orakpo walks, replacing him in 2014 would be a team effort. It wouldn't just be one guy. It would be Rob Jackson, Brandon Jenkins, and someone else off the FA market in a Darryl Tapp role.
Ultimately, they would have to replace him in the draft. You can't win without pass rushers in this league, and if you're unwilling to pay the premium for a pass rusher that everyone else is paying, then you have to use the draft to find the next Orakpo. We will not be able to do that in 2014.
RobH4413 12-17-2013, 05:46 PM Looks like we'll have the cash to hook him up with a pretty fat signing bonus. Obviously a priority.
I do think we need to address the secondary and o-line... but it worries me because we're going to have to over-pay to bring in mediocre talent.
That, unfortunately, is not a winning formula.
Part of the reason I think we need to replace Shanahan with a players coach (likeable, respected amongst the league). When you suck, and you don't make changes... what incentive other than cash is there to join the skins?
Hijinx 12-17-2013, 05:54 PM What is the likelihood of the Skins putting the non exclusive franchise tag on Orakpo? The Skins would only have to offer him 120% of this years salary and be given the choice to match any offer another team made. Plus if he did leave the Skins would get 2 first round draft picks.

Can we get a fact checker on this with real numbers?
donofriose 12-17-2013, 06:13 PM Its about 11 million dollars. Or 1/3 of the cap room from what I heard on the radio today.

If you put the exclusive franchise tag on him he gets the average of the top 5 LBs, that is about $10-11 million. But the non exclusive FT is the lower of that sum or 120% of his 2012 salary, which would be about 6 million. But other in that case other teams can offer him a contract and then the Skins are given the choice to match any offer. If they choose to not match the offer, they would get 2 first round picks as compensation.(in 2015 and 2016)

I agree but the issue I have is are we maximizing Orakpos talent?
Orakpo and Kerrigans primary role is containment under this defense. Only on obvious passing downs do Orakpo and Kerrigan get to rush.
We rarely see tackles for loss because their first move is to stand up the offensive tackle to fill lanes.
You don't pay franchise tag money for a guy to do that. We can pay Rob Jackson the Vet Minimum to do it.
Now if they want to play him like Indy does Robert Mathis, Then pay the man but otherwise it's a waste of a supremely talented player.
EARTHQUAKE2689 12-17-2013, 07:30 PM Gotta be the best player available at any position of need in the early second round.
I'm betting that we sign a RT candidate in FA.
There are plenty of players I would take, just saying a name there. A few from my list of who will be available who would help us:
Odell Beckham Jr. WR, LSU
Jarvis Landry WR, LSU
Louchiez Purifoy CB, Florida
Stephon Tuitt DE/NT, Notre Dame
Anthony Johnson DT, LSU
LaMarcus Joyner CB/FS, Florida State
Craig Loston S, LSU
Cyril Richardson OT/OG, Baylor
James Hurst OT, UNC
Shane Skov MLB, Stanford
De'Anthony Thomas RB/KR/PR, Oregon
Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State
C.J. Mosley, ILB, Alabama
Anyone of those would be fine with me.
FRPLG 12-17-2013, 08:40 PM First question, are we gonna stay 3-4 or 4-3? I think his value is 3-4 OLB now. I hesitate a little if we go 4-3.
I like him better in a 4-3 actually
mooby 12-17-2013, 09:01 PM I like him better in a 4-3 actually
I agree. He's better suited for his hand in the dirt, but if we stick to the 3-4 I hope we get a d-coordinator who can get creative with him and Kerrigan and put them in positions to succeed.
