I'm not talking about the spirit of the Rooney Rule, "doing the right thing" socially, or anything like that. I mean that in their own self-interest the Redskins should do this. My reason is very simple. I believe that minorities are significantly under-represented in the NFL Head Coaching ranks. If you think of the search for a HC like it is prospecting for gold, then you don't want to stake a claim where the gold is played out. You want to mine in an area where there is still plenty of gold in the ground. If NFL teams had done their homework on minority candidates before now, there wouldn't even be a Rooney Rule. So, I think that some of the better HC candidates are likely to be found among overlooked minority coaches. To me, it makes little sense to sift through the usual re-cycled candidates because you're unlikely to find gold there. Instead, look somewhere that is likely to have big, shiny undiscovered nuggets.
