According to the NFL Rules Digest (http://www.nfl.com/rulebook/useofhands), "No player on offense may assist a runner except by blocking for him." I have known this to be a rule for quite some time, but it seems as though it is never enforced. I am only left to assume that I don't understand the rule, and so I am looking for clarification.
In the game against the Lions, Stafford was pushed beyond the line of scrimmage by Bell, which would appear to be a violation of this rule. Bell assisted Stafford, the runner, in a way other than blocking for him.
What gives?

I see it too, but we do it also, so I tend to look the other way. It just seems like one of those rules that doesn't get enforced. With all the constant rule changes the refs have to keep in mind, I don't blame them.

ah the Reggie Bush / Leinart rule
One of those rules that rarely gets called.
In the instance of Bell pushing Stafford, it didn't get more obvious than that. They should just take it off the books if they're not going to enforce it.

Kinda like the rule where you can't use a another player to leap in the air, xtra points , field goals etc.

And the one where you can't fake injuries to stop the clock.
