724Skinsfan 09-13-2013, 11:37 PM I don't know but I find it incredibly hard to believe that a person who's looking for a symbol to denote how cool or badass his team is would pick a bloody scalp. If the origin of the word "redskin" was indeed a bloody scalp how would you sell that to the local fan base? I realize that regardless some people are offended by the term, but is it due to their own wrongful association? Or is it a fierce sensitivity for a conquered people to have to be subjected to the usage of their own terms by their conquerors?
If the Russians attacked and conquered us and then, years later, had their sports teams named after something that represented Americans. Would we as a subjugated people not feel bitter towards them for using our representative imagery? Probably...
artmonkforhallofamein07 09-13-2013, 11:55 PM How would Jack Kent Cooke have handled this naming fiasco? He would tell everyone to **** themselves just like Danny has. Changing the Redskins name is like getting neutered, you lose your name, logo, fight song, probably even the band. Special things that make the Redskins unique, might as well go root for the lizards or Wizards.
Exactly. Losing all of that. It would be a piece of my child hood robbed by such a small margin of people.
If the team moved I would not be the "fan" of that team as I am for the Redskins. I would like the guys but I would not be buying new gear or going out of my way to watch every game.
I doubt the team moves and I honestly do not see Dan S selling the team to change the name. The Redskins are a piece of Dan's childhood with his dad. I also see the guy as being as big of a fan of the team as we are.
Green Monk Machine 09-14-2013, 01:31 PM Personally I would be far more disturbed to change the burgundy and gold colors than to change the name. Those colors are strangely sacred for me.
YEah man, the exterior of my house has burgundy and gold painted objects all around, my old car was customized with a B/G interior paint job, a closet full of B/G outfits, and that's before the thousands of dollars in skins clothes. Burgundy and gold is the tits.
I can't think of what DC themes sounds cool. Lobbyist= hell no, federals= ehhh, freemasons= f' no. To be honest, capitals, nationals and the patriots would be best for DC but they are spoken for. THis is such a messed up situation. I love the DMV but we need to be in DC and or VA all together. That's why I think if the opposition gets leverage in a court matter, the damaged product would need to be scrapped and moved altogether. I'm never buying new anything if that occurred.
IF the if the warriors is an option, anything from the movie The Warriors would be ok by me. That movie rocked. "Can you dig it?"
Lastly,
Why can't we save time and effort and donate money to a cause or bring the Native Americans into the franchise by some means? a percentage of ownership or consultants for direction or imagery?? Fine the name offends you, well what images are you proud about? I don't think the team is the real enemies, isn't our gov't the real culprits who set the example of what is condonable to Native Americans in the 1st place?!
CRedskinsRule 09-15-2013, 09:29 AM Went to the ESPN scoreboard page to look at the intel sheet on our game, first video that pops up is "is the Redskins nickname racist" ... technically our nickname is Skins, so no I wouldn't think that's racist. As for the rest, I didn't let it play, so sick of the discussion.
12thMan 09-15-2013, 10:37 AM There's this chick who follows me on twitter is having a hot debate with herself, at the moment, about the Redskins. Apparently she just found it was "racist". People are fukcng trip. Like, if it's offensive and racist, no one has to sit you down and explain it. Which by the way, the etymology of the name Redskins is very dicey. From what I've read and researched, it's not at conclusive one way or the other.
12thMan 09-15-2013, 10:53 AM Oneida Nation realized a few years back that every time someone does a story on them complaining about the name, they get their casino in NY mentioned. Advertising for pennies on the dollar.
I still wish the media would address the Indian Reservations where the Indians themselves have named their High School mascot the Redskins.
Hey, so this high school is New York on a reservation?

I agree, so it pains me to say that the history of the name doesn't matter. If everyone in 2013 agrees that the name is offensive, it doesn't matter what people thought 150 years ago, sad to say.
When a mass hysteria train gets rolling, brakes are difficult to apply. And the mass hysteria regarding the idea that "Redskins is offensive" has left the station.
fbirks 09-15-2013, 01:58 PM If you drop the letter K, the remaining letters spell
SNIDERS
"HAIL TO THE SNIDERS" has a certain ring to it.
Hmmm......let me think...Washington Snider's.......sweet!

It seems that FSU basically did this and that's why they're aloud to be the Seminoles. But I guess it's too late now...
