monk81 03-16-2005, 10:09 PM For all of you nay sayers out there, Gibb's did adjust the offense. It was just towards the end of the season when he did it (last 6 games). It was not necessarily his plays that were a problem at the end of the season either. He likes to pull 2 players from the weak side to the strong side to block on runs. That is the basis for his running game. He decided early in the season that pulling two wasn't working so he started pulling only one. The irony was that while this wasn't working for Gibb's during the season, it was working for other teams. Watching NFL playbook this offseason I was able to see that other teams were having success pulling two, particularly when the Patriots did it against the Steelers in the playoffs. So it is not Gibb's or his system. He already addressed the need to get more vertical, and that will eventually open up the running game. If you ask me we needed to solidify an offensive line that was better at pass protection than run blocking. I believe that he has done that this offseason. So lets see where this goes before doubting a man that has already stated that it was going to take some time to reestablish the skins as a threat in the NFL. He had to start from scratch with the team that Steeve had almost built. In closing give him time, get off his back, and lets see where the man can take the Skins. I have full confidence that we will not be disappointed.
TOTALLY AGREE Angry SSG!!! I HAVE FAITH IN GIBBS!!!!!!!!!
KLHJ2 03-16-2005, 10:14 PM I'm going to break the moratorium on talking about Davis - sorry BrudLee.
Letting Davis go was a good move. First, Davis was set to have a $9.5 million cap figure when he was released. Second, Davis didn't fit Spurrier's scheme. Third, Davis was old. Fourth, the guy isn't exactly durable - he spent basically all of last season and his latest injury has been deemed career threatening.
Old ok. Cap hit, ok injured last season, yeah! But wait, didn't Stephen Davis help the Panthers get to the superbowl? As a matter of fact he did. And you cannot tellme that he wasn't a factor on their offense. Did you see how bad there running game was this year without him, and even worse when they lost Foster?
SmootSmack 03-16-2005, 10:36 PM As I've said - Gibbs has three years to get his offense going. That gives him time to get his boys here, and time to impliment the system. If he still has this type of offense then, will you still defend him so staunchly?
I know it's hard to fully understand what someone is thinking via the Internet, but I get the impression that you're convinced that he's not going to turn things around.
Daseal 03-16-2005, 10:46 PM Smoot - I have my questions, but I think he could. I'm a Redskins fan, I lack optimism. I didn't see enough last year to go into this coming year with faith in the offense. Could I be wrong? Most certainly. Could I be right? No one on the board wants to think so.
I think he could turn it around, sure. I hope he does, it just shocks me how no one here would even admit his playcalling was sub-par at the end of the season. It was all "on the players." Now people have conceded that playcalling was bad, but I don't see much of a change coming. Hopefully he proves me wrong and stops running an uber conservative offense and opens it up some. I'm not asking for a Spurrier-esque offense. 5-10 more passing plays a game and more effective routes are all I want. I don't think that's outragious. We have a man in Clinton Portis that is hard to stop, but let's back the safeties up.
As far as Stephen Davis goes, don't forget his untimely fumbles.
monk81 03-16-2005, 10:56 PM It was all "on the players."
To the media and fans maybe it was "on the players", but in the post game press conferences, Joe stood up and took the blame and pointed to himself.
Did Joe drop the balls, or was it Gardner? Did Joe commit STUPID penalties or was it Smoot, and others? Did Joe fumble in the last 1:41 of the Cowboy game or was it Brown? YET JOE TOOK THE BLAME.
All we are saying is give the guy a break, he was out of the league for a while, and needed time to adjust. The clock management errors last year were annoying to me, but I'll give the guy a chance and realize it will take more than one season before we see an impact....too much stuff to undo from our numerous past coaches. Maybe you'd prefer to see Norv Turner, or Spurrier back instead............

That's not true at all; most all of us did say the playcalling wasn't up to par, we just didn't choose to go on a witch hunt after Joe Gibbs. The players DID have alot to do with it and there were people here who wouldn't admit that the players didn't play up to par. It was all "on coach Gibbs."
Like it or not, the offense became much more effective in the second half of the season as well as the playcalling. Overall, there is plenty to have faith in this coming season.

One: Did I already miss the first games of the 2005 season? How could you see a change in the playcalling when they haven't even played a game yet?
Two: God I hope not! One painful round of that inept offense was enough. I'd like to see Ramsey live through the season.

You should try reading the majority of if not the entire thread before posting something. We were talking about last season and the changes he made then. Whether Gibb's will be able to turn this thing around or not seems to be the other part of this discussion. Get on the same page ok.

Why are we still arguing about last season? It's over! Move on!
God I can't wait for the draft to come so we can have something else to talk about.
