warriorzpath 09-12-2013, 02:38 AM Another key is finding a weak link on offense, especially on the line, since they are consistently on the field on all offensive plays. Just thinking like a fighter- a fighter can only fight at a fast pace based on what talents, skills, and physical condition that the fighters in. But not all fighters can fight at that style.
It's gotta be like that for all the offensive players consistently on the field for the team to be able to sustain success. But that can't be the case- you're going to have at least one player that can't play like that. Find that player (or those players) and you've found the weak link to attack after the initial onslaught.
The Goat 09-12-2013, 03:40 AM Started rewatching the game, got through the 1st half. You can't do that to your defense, leave it on the field nearly all the 1st qtr and a lot of the 2nd. At least we got to see a lot of the D, and there's a lot to like. The front seven is not elite but very good. Bowen was kinda quiet and cofield not as effective without two hands but the D line is solid. LB corp is also. I think ppl have a way higher standard for London. He missed some tackles (because of physical limitations) but made a lot of smart plays also. Riley missed some tackles too (because he's out of place sometimes) but made some good ones. Riley's side/gap was attacked more than London's and Riley let himself get blocked out of the play or bit on the fake too much. Several of the big McCoy runs were on Riley, including the one right before Philly scored late in the 2nd half.
But our secondary still sucks. Rambo is a huge liability at FS, but why put biggers back there? He's a converted corner now? I still think the team made a mistake not trying Hall at centerfield when they decided to keep him. Hall lacks the physical ability to cover the better receivers but probably is our best DB at reading the defense. Anyway, the corners are playing way off the LOS and Rambo bites on anything. Biggers wasn't much better.
Not enough seen of the offense to say a lot, other than Philly put on the zone blocking clinic that night and I hope Shanny calls out the oline all week for it. Our guys didn't get to the 2nd level run blocking and looked flat slow sometimes. You could say sluggish from sitting too long but it's a lousy excuse. And the pass blocking...ugh. Hopefully this group gets it act together ASAP.

Chief X_Phackter 09-12-2013, 12:18 PM The media is overlooking this, but Vick's words doesn't sound like a player that wants to keep up that fast-paced offense for a full season. One way or another, the media and the eagles are still trying to anoint them - NFL's Dream Team.
Vick: "I've never been a part of anything like it. When the first quarter was over, I thought we was about to go into halftime. It was unreal. The only thing I could tell myself was, 'It's going to be a long season.'"
I say let 'em. It will take the focus off of the Skins for a while, and under the radar is best. By mid-season we will know who the REAL Eagles are...maybe before then.
JoeRedskin 09-12-2013, 01:05 PM I have been reading some of the analysis from various sites and watching the film & field shots. Kelly's offense created big lanes in the run game by spreading the D wide. Also, used different read options to force Fletcher to make the choice. Really singled out Fletcher as the option target. Once he committed, Fletcher simply did not have the recovery speed to make up the lost step. In addition, safety play was pretty miserable - bad angles, missed tackles, etc.
Solid tackling would have made a huge difference. This offense works b/c of McCoy. Period. Not Vick and not Jackson. They help obviously, but, if you don't have a McCoy level runner, this O don't fly. Also, defense needs speed b/c the offense isolates defenders and really makes them responsible for a lot of ground. Fast, disciplined linebacking, IMHO, is the key to stopping it.
Good designs, but nothing good tackling wouldn't slow down. Also, the concept needs a big field. Between the 20's, this offense is likely to make some yards. As they get into the red zone, however, field shrinks and so will the lanes both passing and running. Still - gotta tackle or any "scheme" will beat you.
Evilgrin 09-12-2013, 01:14 PM Thinking negatively, I'm worried Fletcher might catch alot of heat for bad play this year. I don't really think it's fair. He was bad in pass coverage last year. However, he is all we have at the spot, and we had no cap space to sign anyone.

I know it's sacrilege to some to criticize him, but if he doesn't play well he deserves heat just like any other player.

Chip Kelly is 1st coach to dial up 53 1st half plays since @CoachBillick dialed up 56 for MIN in Week 15 1998 at Ravens, who then hired him.
Hard to believe Billick would ever have 56 plays, let alone in one half.

He's still playing well and he's invaluable as far as leadership and being the "QB of the defense". He can read offenses and align the D like no one else.
But, he is losing his impact. He'll rack up the tackles and get some INTs this season, but aside from Kerrigan obviously, I think the star of our LB crew this season is going to be Perry Riley.

They ran 74 per game last year.
