Didn't want to start a thread but good salary cap news
@MarkMaske: Cofield agreed to reduce his salary from $4.05 million to the minimum $840,000, receiving the remaining $3.21 million in bonus money.
Why not sooner when we could have used that cap space for shopping, Barry?

I don't get why we kept pat White maybe Cousins injury is worse the we know.
I had the same question about Grossman.
Grossman was always a lock for the #3. White was a surprise but again I don't think he's here for very long. He's a luxury we can afford for now. Cousins is fine.

I think you may have solved this mystery.
Good thinking...I had never considered that. He could simulate Vick in practice.
Other possible explanations:
*We're keeping him to bolster trade value. A player who makes a team may hold more perceived value than one who was cut.
*Would we actually use him in the backfield or at receiver alongside RGIII?
*Kirk's injury is actually serious enough to prevent him from playing early in the season. We keep White rostered AND active on gamedays in case Griffin needs to come out. We keep Grossman inactive like last season. If White needs to step in for a play or two or God forbid the rest of a game, we won't have to switch offensive scheme mid-game...just hands. When Kirk is 100%, he's gone.
*We're planning on trading Kirk sooner than later and we want a backup who can run the read-option. As mentioned, White becomes the in-game replacement and Grossman would be the "next-week" substitute.
*We're holding him for the sole reason of keeping Philly from using him in practice since he knows our offense. We cut him Tuesday morning.
I said the same thing 4 post up :saywhat::)

The Redskins' restructurings of the deals of Barry Cofield, Stephen Bowen and Adam Carriker totaled about $3.7 million in cap savings.

Could the Redskins pursue a trade for Jarius Byrd? - Son of Washington (http://sonofwashington.com/2013/09/05/could-the-redskins-pursue-a-trade-for-jarius-byrd/)
Just another story to add to yours.
Need to Know: Redskins’ restructure money already spent | Rich Tandler's Real Redskins (http://realredskins.com/2013/09/05/need-to-know-redskins-restructure-money-already-spent/)
The Redskins restructured the contracts of Stephen Bowen, Adam Carriker, and Barry Cofield in recent days to create some cap room. But don’t get excited about the prospects of them going after a free agent. As Bruce Allen indicated during training camp, the Redskins are restructuring deals just to be able to stay under the salary cap. During the offseason only the top 51 contracts count towards the cap. Once the season starts, the contracts of all 53 active players plus players on PUP and injured reserve and the practice squad count towards. The Redskins had some trimming to do to get in compliance with the cap and to give themselves some cushion during the season. In short, the savings from the restructures are already spent.

Well, they got guys like Barnett clearly out of necessity. And Gumbs is just some sort of fluke/miracle. But you can tell especially by looking at the practice squad roster, and from comments MS has made this summer, that they were keen on going with and rewarding the guys who have been practicing with them all spring and summer.
It's also possible they never asked Cofield or Bowen before now.
It's also possible that they needed the money at this point because with the season starting roster bonuses are probably kicking in
