I think we probably gave Samuels than he would have found in free agency, however, I think he was well worth it.
Was Samuels Worth The Contract???jdlea 03-15-2005, 11:03 AM I think we probably gave Samuels than he would have found in free agency, however, I think he was well worth it. MTK 03-15-2005, 11:07 AM We paid a fair market price for Samuels, too bad we could have had him for cheaper earlier in the offseason. The offensive line is a very important cog to this offense, it is with any offense but especially for Gibbs who stresses the running game and protection for his QB. Last year we saw how life was without one standout tackle, I don't think we were interested in going through that again. diehardskin2982 03-15-2005, 03:15 PM Yes he is worth it, because his contract also made a statement we are trying to establish continuity and if you are loyal to the skins, you will be rewarded TheMalcolmConnection 03-15-2005, 03:19 PM Very true. He got his payday. He restructured to help out the team and because of his solid play and team effort he gets the money. That is a way to appeal to money hungry players AND to one's who play for the love of the game. sportscurmudgeon 03-17-2005, 12:51 AM Malcom: Samuels restructured twice and set himself up in a siutation where he was due for a huge payday AND it would not have been a huge cap benefit for the Skins to just release him. Then, he took the rather obvious situation that there was no replacement for him on the squad and looked at the "market value: for OTs and basically told the Skins to pay up or he'd just take the money that was owed to him for one year and then become a free agent. This was not a reward for being a team player. This was paying what they had to pay in order to prevent going into 2005 with a gaping hole on the left side of the OL. Remember, that's where Dockery is too so let's not delude ourselves that there is an abundance of talent in the LG position. Samuels proves that the noble goals and intentions of the Redskins not to pay players at a position more than they do "better players" at the same position are "fluid". Jansen is the better tackle on the line and has been for several years now. Samuels is making a ton more than Jansen made when Jansen signed and will be for a while to come. Now cpmpare that situation to the explanations about why Pierce and Smoot were let go... MTK 03-17-2005, 10:28 AM Problem is we're talking about different positions SC. Right tackles around the league aren't as highly paid as left tackles. It's apples and oranges. |
