On NFL TV they interviewed Shawne Merrimen and he said he went to high school with Lavar Arrington's brother. And Lavar came to watch his brother play and met Shawne. And Shawne now talks to Lavar and gets advice, maybe Lavar will put in a good word.......I wouldn't mind drafting him as our DE...........

The problem with Merriman is he's a tweener at DE and is expected to move to outside linebacker once he gets to the NFL. If he adds 15 pounds, he could become a starting DE, but right now he's a nickel DE or OLB.

Unfortunately, OLB is not a position of need for us and we need a starting DE (something Merriman is unlikely to become).

I'd expect us to go after Adam "PacMan" Jones or Antrelle Rolle. So, the only way I see us going after Merriman is if we trade some picks for an additional mid-first round pick. That would probably require trading next year's first rounder, and our two third rounders from this year (assuming we get a third rounder for Gardner).

The Dallas Cowboys are currently the team projected by most scouts to be the team that drafts Merriman. Oh well.

i like justin tuck from notre dame. much more solid against the run and will be a true DE even though at the 260lbs range. id expect us to go after a DE instead of a cornerback. if you can get constant pressure from your front four, you CB's wont have to be "shutdown" corners. if you look at the bucs in their hayday, you will see that barber isnt exactly a shutdown corner, nor kelly, but the front four helped them be in the right position for fumbles and tipped balls. (which barber is one of the best at in the NFL) but he is not a very good shutdown corner as far as one on one coverage. if we can produce pressure from our front four, our corners...lbs.... safties... will have a great time sitting and waiting for a big play. so like i said, we need to upgrade the DE position and would prefer to groom our own through the draft. the saying isnt said to waste peoples breathe... Merriman worked out at the combine at 273lbs so I don't think he's a tweener any more, I started a thread about this guy a while back before anyone really heard of him and at the time I compared him to Jason Taylor of the Dolphin's, Taylor is a little taller but Merriman is bigger and stronger, I personally think this guy is the good's, his body type will allow him to add more weight without losing much mobility.

WOW! 273, that's about 10 pounds more than what I thought he weighed. 273 is about an average weight (maybe 5 pounds under) for a DE. How'd he look? Thanks offis for correcting/updating me.

We don't need another Arrington folks. And let's pray that DAL doesn't draft him or Derrick Johnson. They scare me! By the way how much does Arrington weigh nowadays? Do you guys remember his first(?) game back from injury? I think it was agaist SF. SF had a G pulling on a screen play and Arrington snuffed it. He was lined up in a three point stance before he knocked the G on his ass, indian-style, before tackling the RB. The dude is mad strong! :oink:

I agree we don't need another Arrington. :) But Merriman isn't Arrington he's bigger and more capable of being a true defensive end, I have stated all along that we don't need a defensive end regardless William's is more than capable of pressuring the QB without a true pass rusher, but with Lavar back if he's everything everyone think's he is then why is everyone so worried about a defensive end? A player who can come off the outside and pressure the QB? Isn't that supposed to be Lavar's specialty? Personally I don't see it, Lavar has a real difficulty disengauging from block's once a linemen or TE lock's on to him he cannot get around them, I want Lavar to be that player as much as anyone, but from what I have seen he will never be close to LT, and that is what is expected from him LT like abilities.

RF, I actually didn't see Merriman workout but I saw an interview with him and they dicussed his weight and how the added weight has pushed him into the true defensive end position, from watching game highlight's of him there's no doubt in my mind that he will have no problem maintaining his athletic abilities at that weight, the guy is relentless defiently what you would consider a real player.

I still believe Merriman will play OLB in a 3-4 defense. Sort of like Suggs does for BAL. That's why it's likely DAL will pick him in this years draft. :oink:

i really hope that we get this guy...wouldnt it help our cornerbacks if we could pressure the quarterback without blitzing?...
