GTripp0012 07-15-2013, 12:38 PM The injury angle is overstated, for sure, but it's a lot easier to point to specific injuries than to point out that the Redskins haven't put together back to back winning seasons in two decades.
Also, if we are healthy, I think we have a great chance of another winning season. But I am a bit skeptical of the quality of our training staff. They haven't produced great results in the last five years, and some outgoing players have popped off regarding their frustration.
But the big thing is: the great player on the Redskins who you expect to be even better next year is RG3, and he's rehabbing. There are other key players on the Redskins, but it's a veteran roster with a very young quarterback, and we put more on that quarterback's plate than a lot of QB's can handle, which means that there's always going to be some risk there.

??? Honest question, how can you say that when the injury in question is not his first of that nature .I understand he is recovering well but to say the injury angel is overstated doesn't make sense.
JoeRedskin 07-15-2013, 12:59 PM Can't make a guy get surgery if he doesn't want it. Plus there are no guarantees it would solve the problem.
I keep going back to my own foot surgery. I had a torn ligament in the foot (tiny tear - still made the foot swell like a grapefruit). I recognize I am not a premier athelete (or any type of athelete outside of couch athletics) but I had the surgery done by the same guy who does this work for the Ravens and other atheletes. He made it clear there is nothing guarranteed and that the longer you wait the less guarrantees you have.
My foot is better but it is in no way the same as it was before. The injury is just not the kind that is easily correctable.

The problem with the injury angle by most people is it isnt applied universally. Look at the reviews by Jaws. His number one complaint of RG3 was that the read option gets QB's killed and he wont last. When it came to Kaepernick and Wilson, the read option and their running ability was one of the reasons they should be elevated.
There is no guarantee of anything, including two ACL tears means its going to happen once a year for the rest of his career. Especially given that his injuries were more about him trying to do too much and could have been avoided. He will be smarter this year about hits in my opinion. If not, then it will be a constant concern for the rest of his career. Lots of athletes have had multiple injuries before only to go onto have successful careers. Plenty have had a single injury that they couldnt come back from.
Lets apply the injury angle across the board. Having back surgery can be difficult to come back from, especially for linemen. So is safe to say that JPP's career is over or that he will never be the same as he was early in his career? Or is that overstating things?

It's more than just a veteran roster, the coaching staff minus Danny Smith's replacement all have been there several years. The Skins are as stable a franchise as we have seen in a long time, and that fact will help us be a force this season. I am sure of that. Many of our backups did get solid time last year, so we aren't just a one deep team in very many spots, and that will help us overcome any upcoming injuries, and you know there will be injuries.

We're 'well off' at most every position on the field, but exceptional at very few.
Last year we were exceptional at QB, RB, and the left side of the O line. Of those three, the position most likely to return to in 2013 is QB, but I can't say it's a sure thing. I think it's likely, but not certain.
A team that is exceptional at QB but average through out the rest of the roster can make a pretty nice run. And there will be some role players who chip in with excellent years. There will also be role players who need to be replaced due to lacking performance.
Any hopes of super bowl contention this year are on Robert Griffin to be exceptional. And he's a good guy to bet on. He just doesn't have a ton of help. It's a roster of role guys. I think he's going to get a stronger contribution from his defense this year, but he's the focal point of everything we do on offense.

I agree and disagree at the same time. I do think there are role guys, but I think that is what Shanahan used to take Denver to the SB. More importantly though, I think it's a team of hard workers. I don't think there are any slackers or me-first guys (maybe DHall, but he seems to be changing), and everyone accepts that its a unified team effort. Everything is setting up pretty nicely, and I think several players who are "role guys" are going to shine, as the system and consistency allows the whole team to play in sync and at a faster speed. Griffin's abilities definitely take the team to a different notch, but with all the reps Capt Kirk has gotten with Griffin's injury, I have very little doubt that he would be able to step in and keep the team moving forward. In fact, he would be highly motivated since other teams would definitely be watching his tape.
donofriose 07-15-2013, 02:34 PM Winning Super Bowls is based more on depth than anything else in my opinion. Stars might win you games, but teams win championships. If you have an elite quarterback, which I believe the Redskins will have possibly as soon as next year, you will be in contention for every Super Bowl. All the other positions just always seem to play well enough once you have that Quarterback. You look at the Giants, the Packers, and even the Ravens when they won the Super Bowl, they had injuries at a lot of key positions, but they had a quarterback playing at an elite level which was the main reason they won their Super Bowls. So while the Redskins may not have "superstars", or that one elite player outside RG3, if RG3 can stay healthy... history has shown there will be no limit for this team.
GTripp0012 07-15-2013, 02:42 PM Under Cerrato, this organization did a really poor job of retaining its valuable players. We've done much better at that since Mike Shanahan took over. I think I've lobbed legitimate complaints that we let pro bowler x, y, and z walk, which could have been avoided, but we've also managed to retain key guys like London Fletcher, Will Montgomery, Kory Lichtensteiger, Darrel Young, Santana Moss, and Fred Davis.
Okay, maybe that's not that many. But the fewer holes you create, the easier it is to fill those holes with player acquisition. I liked that this past offseason, we were able to acquire new talent without having to replace the old talent. The trade off is that we're older, overall, but I think that's a fair deal in order to maintain continuity.
For example, we could have let Lichtensteiger walk, but determined that he was valuable to us in the context of the rest of the line. I liked the move to re-sign him.
