I was going to hold off on this thread, but since the topic of Barry Cofield being vastly underrated came up today and the fact that NFL.com is doing a list series for each teams overrated and underrated players which you can find right here All-time underrated and overrated players for every team - NFL.com (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000209072/article/alltime-underrated-players-and-overrated-for-every-team) (Redskins will be revealed on the 4th of July), it got me thinking of a couple of questions.

Who is the most overrated and the most underrated Redskin on the roster this year? (Why?)

Who is the most overrated and the most underrated Redskin of all time? (Why?)

I'll say overrated is Ryan Kerrigan, underrated is Darrel Young. I picked Ryan Kerrigan because he is widely regarded by the NFL as a very good 3-4 OLB and complement to Orakpo and a pro bowler. When he plays with Orakpo he's good, but when Orakpo is out, you rarely see him making the big play or getting to the QB consistently as much as other great 3-4 OLBs can.
Darrel Young on the other hand is quietly rated by some as a top 5 FB (B/R NFL 1000 2013: Top 16 Fullbacks | Bleacher Report (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1444312-br-nfl-1000-2013-top-16-fullbacks/page/15) ; Redskins lock up a couple of key pieces - NFC East Blog - ESPN (http://espn.go.com/blog/nfceast/post/_/id/49493/redskins-lock-up-a-couple-of-key-pieces) ). He has really progressed well considering it was only a few years ago the Redskins converted him from a LB that wasn't making the roster to a fullback that helped us lead the league in rushing last year.

My most overrated Redskin of all time is probably going to be Clinton Portis. My most underrated Redskin of all time is going to be Don Warren. He was that solid TE who did his job and was with the Redskins for 14 years, where he went to 4 super bowls and won 3. To equate him to todays game, he's like the Chris Chester of our offense in terms of getting the job done. Or another comparison would be that he's Santana Moss of today: that player who is still producing late in his career and you forget about because there is so many other weapons on the offense.

How is Heath Shuler overrated?

Current Overrated/Underrated: Pierre Garcon/London Fletcher
All-Time Underrated: James Thrash

:)

Seriously though

All-time Overrated: probably Chip Lohmiller or Doug Williams. Chip wasn't quite as good as history remembers him. And Williams had great (undeniably great) moments for the Redskins but in all he only played 16 games for us and most of it was a rather average career here. I think some think he was a stud for years on end here

All-time Underrated: Mark Rypien. He was a pretty solid QB for more than just that 1991 season.

Current overrated: Really tempted to say Roy Helu. He's one of my favorite players on the team, but overall he's not as awesome/the game changer that we'd like to believe.

Current Underrated: Not sure Josh Morgan gets enough love for all the little things he does. Also think Chris Chester is a bit underrated

Coming out of college and what skins fans thought he was going to be. I really couldn't think of anyone other than..Clinton Portis.

I thought overrated like when people look back on their careers. Not what they were expected to be when drafted

All time overrated-Lavar Arrington.. I had huge hopes for him as a Redskin, kept waiting for him to become a beast and he never fully did. I wanted him to be our LT but instead he was a very good but not great player.

All time underrated-Monte Coleman.. Huge part of our SB teams but doesn't seem to get the legendary respect that is reserved for bigger names. He wasn't Hall of Fame caliber but he was the heart and soul of many teams.

Current overrated-I've got to agree with SS on Helu. Dude has zero vision as a running back. I was watching the Saints game again recently and he had a stretch play blocked beautifully for him to get to the edge and down the sideline. He cut inside, tripped over Young (who had a great seal block) and fell down for a 3 yard gain. I wish he had a fraction of the vision that Morris and Royster possess but I think he will be a disappointment as a Redskin.

Current Underrated-Garcon and Morgan. They don't have the draft pedigree or contracts of the other WR groups in our division, but for our system, I like them as much as any. Garcon showed an array of skills last year and you can't argue with 9-2 when he starts the game. Morgan got off on a bad note with the Rams debacle but he was our most consistent WR last year in terms of moving the chains and catching the ball. A healthy offseason and he could break out this fall.

Yeah we're on the same page, I just couldn't think of an instant overrated guy, now that I thought of CP, he's the one!

Great call on Riley.

Overrated: Niles Paul (apparently some people think that good hits in special teams make up for his inability to catch the ball)

Underrated: Josh Morgan (As SS said, all the little things he does are not noticed by the average fan)

Overrated: Chase Minnifield

I've heard a lot of people rave about how good of a player Chase will be this year because they've heard about how much the coaches loved him during last years training camp. But given the micro-fracture injury and torn acl being coupled with his less than ideal measurements, I just don't believe he has much of a shot of making the 53 man roster.

Underrated: Brandon Meriweather

I know this might be a slightly controversial one to say as the most underrated player currently on the team but I think Meriweather is a huge asset to our defense. He fits the defensive scheme perfectly because he great in the box (especially if it comes to blitzing from the strong safety position).

A prime example of Meriweather coming in and really making a difference for our defense immediately was the first eagles game last year. In that one quarter or two he was a prime reason why our defense actually looked competent. If he can stay healthy, he will be a big upgrade for our struggling defense this year.
