This type of attitude it why I love what we have become as a football team and why I believe we are here to say as perennial contenders in the NFC.

good post. DefenseW, what do you see within our own defense we need to fix to be more effective? When I think about it, I dont know where to begin. I think consistency in every department: tackling, pass rush, man coverage, over the top coverage, gap discipline, etc. One thing we cant complain about is turnovers...we seem to get them.

Getting Orakpo and Carricker back and giving time for Jarvis Jenkins to fully recover from major knee surgery is really going to increase our pass rush and sack numbers. Our secondary will benefit greatly.

But the single #1 biggest need for improvement from last seasons defense is solidifying both safety positions. Getting the Safety positions filled with NFL caliber athletes will go a long way to solidifying our defense. The additions of Tanard Jackson, B. Rambo, Phillip Thomas and a healthy B. Meriweather is huge.
Safety is such an important position on defense and last year we were severely understaffed. This new group, if they can get healthy and/or return from suspension will give a bump to the whole defensive unit almost as comparable as the addition of RGIII to the offense last year.
You are only as good as your weakest link in the chain and that is particularly true for NFL defenses. You can not hide a sub-par shitty player on defense. Good offenses will go after them. You fix the safety positions and we no longer have a glaring weakness on defense.
For the first time since the 1991 Sb season I might be able to say we are close to solidfiying our defense.
HTTR! It took a long time to finally fix it. I am just glad we are close, and it looks like we have depth! Thank you ShanAllen.

I forgot which expert said it but earlier today on ESPN they were saying the skins defense will be vastly improved and it's a reason why we will repeat in the east. I agree

Pat White willing to change positions to make the team.

Still won't make the team.

Agree. I think T Jax could be the best player in the secondary if he got his mind right.

Orakpo is gonna have a huge year if he can stay healthy.

Counting on getting anything, even a roster spot, from T. Jax is risky bordering on foolish..

1. There's no set date for his return. Aug 31st is the first day he is ELIGIBLE to be reinstated, but there is no guarantee it will happen..

2. Even IF he is reinstated, the team would have to be willing to take him back.

3. Even IF the team takes him back, he would have gone 12 months without any football activity.

4. Even IF he resumes football activity, he would have to re-learn the defense that he had no OTA's or training camp with.

5. Even IF he re-learns the defense, he would then have to beat out players that have been in the program since April and that may not go over well in the locker room.

6. Even IF he wins a spot and the locker room is ok with him, he's one bad decision away from being gone all over again.

I don't see Allen/Shanahan/Haslett taking that chance on what could be a team poised for a deep playoff run.
