Didn't we also think Chad Morton was going to fis the return game? Special teams are all about blocking and execution and the Redskins have not done enough of that in recent years.

BrudLee 03-11-2005, 10:05 AM I had exactly that in mind when i wrote "think about it!" Think about that! The perfect crime! Does Laverneous need a ride to the airport? Jokes! He was also on IR last year, so it becomes harder to blame him. The problem with Morton right now is that we have three other return men (Thrash, Brown, and Moss) who, if not as good as him, are certainly serviceable. We also (surprise!) had a new coordinator last year who emphasized different things in the game. We blocked kicks (yay!) and gave up returns (boo!). We also had a lot of our special teams players playing defense and offense due to injuries (which left them not-as-fresh as one would hope). We also had Ola Kimrin on our roster for the bulk of the season, and experience tells us that isn't a good thing, as he's rotten at kickoffs. Special teams should improve next year, if only because all of the aboce won't be true next year. BDBohnzie 03-11-2005, 11:00 AM you can attribute Dante Hall's decrease last year to everyone in the league gunning for him. his breakout year, no one knew who he was...but he made sure they did by season's end. ought four, everyone knew Hall's name, and made sure he was securely covered... I think it'll be exciting to see how Morton fits into the scheme. If you are going to pit Moss as receiver 1 or 2, you are not going to want him returning kicks all the time...i think Morton will return kickoffs with Brown/Thrash, while Brown will return punts, with Moss being the gamebreaking returner if needed. celts32 03-11-2005, 11:02 AM Chad Morton is an excellent return man who is likely overpaid. You can't just bring a great returner in here and think it makes you instantly have a great return game. it doesn't work that way. Moss will do a good job returning the kicks if the Redskins do as good a job of blocking for him as the Jets have done. That's my only point. TheMalcolmConnection 03-11-2005, 11:14 AM We have loads of speedsters, and I'm liking the fact that McCants might be the "possession" receiver we all want and need. I MIGHT change my stance and say that if Williams is gone with our #1 pick that we MIGHT want to look at another position. He had a kick return for a touchdown in 2003 and another return for over 40 yards. He averaged nearly ten yards a punt return, despite the fact that he rarely returned punts with the Jets. (Non-Special Teams side note: he also started two games at running back, ending with a 4.5 YPC, with 18.75% of his carries going for first downs). 2004 was disappointing, but 6 games with a new coaching staff before a season ending injury shouldn't be a career year for anyone. TheMalcolmConnection 03-11-2005, 11:20 AM Most definitely. I keep forgetting he is ALSO coming back. SkinsRock 03-11-2005, 11:23 AM Seemed like the blocking got better later in the year....Betts even had a long return, and had it been one of the speedsters, it may have gone for a TD. Should make for a good competition in training camp! (seems so far away right now though :() That Guy 03-11-2005, 11:30 AM simon can also run and return kicks, and we resigned him. |
