If disasters make the playoffs in their final season as head coach, what does that make Zorn's tenure?
Sure they make a playoff appearance but Gibbs gave away the farm draft pick wise and gave away the future. That playoff appearance had waaaaay more to do with the emotion over ST's death than anything Gibbs did.
Zorn's tenure was a total joke.

Don't sell Stan short, Stan was a massive underachiever.
Stan had the body of a doughnut eating, video game playing softy. If Stan had a little bit of work ethic he would have been a great player.
Having said that I remember early on in Stan's Redskins career, Joe Gibbs saying Stan had a bright future and complimenting him in training camp. I remember being excited to finally seeing Stan play because Gibbs had talked him up.
I guess I have a short term memory with Stan Humphries only because it seems he had his best time of his career with San Diego right around the worst time to be a Washington Redskins fan. Grass is always greener on the other side, but I would have taken Stan Humphries over John Friesz or Heath Shuler.

Yeah and we only got a fourth round pick in trading him away. In hindsight that was a massive fail.
Something happen in his relationship with Gibbs. Rypien was no stellar athlete either and before the 92 season Rypien was not very good in actual games. So before Rypien ha his break out 92 season I was surprised Stan could not beat out Rypien. I was partial to Stan over Rypien.
I am not sure what the issue was with Stan and Gibbs/FO?
I have always assumed it was Stan not working hard enough.?.?

Gibbs always succeeded at keeping the ship together and focused in times of adversity. I definitely think his leadership and guidance played a key part in that season.

Gibbs 1.0 was fantastic. Gibbs 2.0 was a disaster that the organization is only now getting out from under. You cant infer anything about Gibbs 1.0 by looking at Gibbs 2.0.
I am just wondering, if Gibbs 2.0 was a disaster, what was Spurrier/Snyder/Cerrato? Is there something worse than disaster? Gibbs 2.0 inherited one of the all time worst Redskins teams in the history of the Redskins and made them a playoff team.

As was I. And the pick ended up being a 3rd (it was a conditional 4th)
I was told by teammates and other people associated with the team back then that-and that is kind of convoluted so bear with me-Gibbs didn't like Humphries, never wanted to draft him. Mainly because of the work ethic questions. But Beathard was a big fan, and so was Richie Petitbon. And Cooke gave the overriding decision in Beathard's favor on the Humphries pick. And Beathard's thinking was that Gibbs had been hinting at retiring at the end of the 80s so Beathard figured he had his new coach and their mutually agreed upon QB ready to go for when Gibbs left. But Gibbs didn't go and Beathard moved on. And then he took Humphries just before Richie became HC, which pissed Richie off.

That makes sense.
I knew Beathard and Gibbs did not always agree on player personnel. Nobody is perfect and neither of them was either. Beathard drafted Ryan Leaf! Ouch!

could you imagine if internet reporting was available back then. We probably would have a very different memory of the time period

WOW.
You do realize that in the last 4 years since Gibbs 2.0 the skins have finished in 4th place in the NFC east...during Gibbs 2.0, he led a very mediocre team to 2 playoffs and their only playoff victory in this Millennium?
What other coach has recently taken his Redskins team to the playoffs 50% of the time?
You got it....Joe Gibbs 1.0
Not Shanny, Not Norv, Not Zorn or Spurrier (obviously), not Pardee, not Shottenheimer, only George Allen matched the success of Gibbs 2.0.
Other than that you'd have to go back to when the Wizard of Oz was cutting edge. That was Ray Flaherty, the only other Redskins coach to go to the playoffs 50% of the time And win multiple championships. Even Lombardi couldn't get the Skins in the playoffs.
Gibbs is a winner, plain and simple...and it was a joy when he was hired again and brought respectability back to the team while Vinny was here, if you recall.
I am sick and tired of hearing how crappy Gibbs was when he returned.
He had a foolish owner, a horrible GM, at best an average team, a backup quarterback and still had them "fight their guts out" for him.
Do you realize that prior to this year, in the last 19 years since Gibbs 1.0 we only went to the playoffs ONCE excluding Gibbs 2.0?
Name me a better Redskins coach than Gibbs 2.0...I am willing to listen.
