Gmanc711 03-08-2005, 08:29 PM So Basically we did this....
Traded Laverneous Coles (+ a very crutical 6 million dollars, since 3 million was gonna be the hit regardless), Perice and Smoot who we could have apparently easily resigned with that extra 6 million for more or less Santana Moss???
This is what really pisses me off about that Coles trade. We had the leverage with both Smoot and Perice, and they are now both gone because we have no money. I cannot belive we let Coles do that to our team. I would have rather had Coles relased, so that we could have kept that 5 million dollars. We could have done alot better than just getting Santa Moss? Is this for real. I honestly dont htink we could have handled this worse. (insert dumb and dumber movie) We dont have the money for gas, we dont have the money to eat, we dont even have the money to sleep"!
I'm ussually the optomistic type, but this really has me wondering. Does anyone else share in this frustration?
azskinsfan2 03-08-2005, 08:35 PM Don't know how all the Cap money works with releases or trades etc. But I'm definitely pissed that we two of my favorite players go when it didn't sound like we put up much of a fight to keep them!!!
azskinsfan2 03-08-2005, 08:37 PM Also, we just gave Samuels the biggest signing bonus in team history!!! Couldn't we have used some of that to keep Smoot and Pierce!!! I think the two of them are worth much more than Samuels!!!!!
let the second guessing begin, LOL
Paintrain 03-08-2005, 08:38 PM The Coles deal didn't cause Pierce and Smoot to move on.. The Redskins FO established what they were willing to pay for them and they got deals that exceeded them.. I don't know why when we lose free agents due to (GASP) budget contraints we are up in arms and have to point fingers, but when it happens to other teams we cheer because Danny Boy has deep pockets..
Analysts applaud the Giants getting Pierce, but they also say that they may have overpaid for a player who has had one good year.. Gibbs said they chose not to match Pierce for the overall good of being fiscally responsible..
Even in the WP article about the Coles deal says that the Skins can afford the contract they offered Smoot in the middle of last season. They had budgeted a certain amount and said before the Coles thing was an issue that they wouldn't exeed Springs' $10 mil. signing bonus for Smoot. He got $12 mil (I think) and one more year than the Skins were offering, but less on the average. The Skins offered 5 yrs, $32 mil, the Vikings, 6 yrs, $36 mil..
Allow for disappointment that he is gone, but keep perspective that we are just going thru what every other NFL team goes thru in the salary cap era.
celts32 03-08-2005, 08:39 PM I have been saying for about a week now that the Skins would have been better off getting the 5 mil bonus back from Coles than trading him for Moss. We have just witnessed stupidity at it's finest...
bigm29 03-08-2005, 08:39 PM You know Gibbs main goal this offseason was to resign smoot and pierce and he failed big and were still left with no money because of that trade. Im so pissed off at this.
But on a positive note, every year we always have great offseasons and do bad, now were having a totally different type of offseason so maybe we'll do good. I just hope Gibbs knows what hes doing because i really am starting to worry.
Gmanc711 03-08-2005, 08:39 PM Also, we just gave Samuels the biggest signing bonus in team history!!! Couldn't we have used some of that to keep Smoot and Pierce!!! I think the two of them are worth much more than Samuels!!!!!
No, Samuels actually helped us out ALOT by restrucuting. So that helps us alot more than it hurts us.
PFunk26 03-08-2005, 09:43 PM I got faith I think we're gonna discover alot of surprises in our team this year, don't get me wrong I loved Smoot but we got to go with the hand we been dealt. I think 3 things, Ramsey is gonna be money this year, Harris or Wilds will step up, and the Oline is gonna have Portis running all over the place it's time to find out what these guys are made of. We're at least 9-7 this season thats my call Peace
downtown4life 03-08-2005, 09:50 PM I think what Gibbs wants to do is take the hit now, all the spending Snyder did in years past is killing us now. Gibbs is not only getting us out of the hole now he is setting us up for years in the future. everyone is critical of gibbs and what he is doing, I think we all know what gibbs has done for us. I am pretty sure he is telling the players this is our offer to you if you take it we appreciate you being loyal if not see you later. In the case of smoot, the redskins had to withdraw because Smoot wanted to take his sweet time and looking at the position we are in cap wise. Gibbs wants to be able to sign rookies and not wait around for players like smoot that want just another buck, what did he end up getting an extra million out of the deal. I cant wait til moss beats smoot down the sidelines for 7 pts then everyone will be praising Gibbs. Lets get some optimism here, were in a tough situation but we have the two best coaches that can lead a team.
