I checked it out some live and only one or two of the people were indians. It looked like the other 95 to 99% were black or white.

Yeah. I was posting on the Washington Post site in the comments section, and this supposedly "Redskins fan" was arguing with me about the name change. I told him about the Indians who were polled on the reservations, and he said "100% of the indians who attended the summit said it was offensive, so that trumps your poll" or something to that effect. I basically asked him how many were "full blooded" and never got a response back. I think it's so silly how people jump on the bandwagon of the easily offended when they don't even know why they are offended.

I hope you pointed out that the symposium was a biased event toward changing the name.

Well, I basically said earlier in the post that if we all wanted to know the true answer as to whether to change the name or not, to allow ALL Full-Blooded Native American Indians to vote on the name. IF they found the name offensive, then the 'skins should change the name. If not, then it's a dead horse issue. That's when the guy brought up the Symposium, which at that time I realized he had no idea what he was arguing for. Oh, but I did bring up why he was not arguing for a name change of the Dallas Cowboys, since cowboys back in those days killed Indians and took their land. Or the violence that Buccaneers and Vikings brought on other people, but they never had an answer for those questions, they just ignored that part and went back to talking about the Redskins name.

Sally Jenkins is a columnist not a reporter. She's paid to give her opinions not to be fair & accurate. Is it too much to ask a "columnist" like Sally Jenkins to write an article that doesn't sound like it came from a jealous high-schooler? From Sally Jenkins in her "article".

"If you’ve long suspected that football is not a measure of intellect,"

"Oooh! And after school, for fun we’ll shoot BB guns at road signs!"

"This is a just another guess, and not scientific method on the level of Redskins.com, but I’m pretty sure that whoever wrote the Redskins.com post wouldn’t score any higher on a history test than your nephew who chews on his arm."

"So I have a suggestion for the commander in chief and the secretaries of the Army, Navy and Air Force, and their chiefs of staff and sergeant majors. Pick up the phone. Put in a call to Snyder, and tell him, “Stop demeaning our most loyal volunteer troops.” Of course, he may be too busy setting off stinkbombs in the school bathroom to listen."

Great point!

On CSN last night Brian Mitchell said that if the name is offensive to even ONE person it should be changed and I have to call BS on that. I'm not saying "Redskins" can't be used as an insult, but individual people are nuts and can be insulted by the dumbest crap!
I guarantee you could find a PETA member who finds any animal-based team name offensive because they think it exploits the animal for human entertainment.
I bet there are born again Christians who find any name with the words "Devil" or "Daemon" offensive because it invokes evil.
There are probably extreme pacifists and/or environmentalists who are offended by Jets and Rockets.
Hell, there are probably color-blind people who find color-based names offensive!
(okay, I've been watching too much Parks & Rec; this is turning into one of those town forum scenes)

The name "Brian Mitchell" now offends me. I wonder what his new name will be?

Didnt see that post by ArtMonkDrills before Mayor quoted it but:

One person? Tbh, not every Indian likes the term 'Native American'. They make the point that when their ancestors roamed the land free, that it wasnt called America. And when it became America, they were pushed off their land. So therefore Native American is not what they want to be called.

Btw, when did Indian become a dirty word so that it was decided that it needed to be changed?

As a rule......they don't use it.
It is a term popularized by PC White men.
Makes me think of Yao Ming doing one of his first interviews when he came to the states....he was asked "How do you like the Chinese food in the USA? He responded......
What is Chinese food?"

Without looking at a lot of the other discussion, I will put my two cents in. The name Redskins is not a racial slur. It's just what people used to call Native Americans. In the mid 1800's people called Negroes "darkies." That's not a racial slur, people just called them that. Indians supposedly called white people palefaces; that's not a racial slur;again that's just a name. Now, if the name of the team was the Savages, i can see that being called a racial slur, but the name is the Redskins. People who are so sensitive just need to back off and shut up.
