I probably shouldn't add to the confusion by starting yet another cornerback thread, but I thought it might be good to look at all the free agent cornerback moves in comparison with each other. And maybe that'll give us some perspective as to what the Skins and Smoot (and his agent) are each thinking.
Gary Baxter: Browns-6 years, $30 million. $10.5 million bonus
Ken Lucas: Panthers-6 years, $36 million, $13 million bonus
Anthony Henry: Cowboys-5 years, $25 million, $11 million bonus
So that's a look at the major cornerbacks who have signed new deals, to give you an idea of what the market is dictating right now. I can't find any info elsewhere, but according to tonight's San Jose Mercury News:
"The Chiefs were optimistic Friday that their recruiting efforts in free-agency would bring a contract agreement with cornerback Samari Rolle. The parties were making progress toward a long-term deal the Chiefs hope would at long last solidify the position.
"I think we're close," coach Dick Vermeil said. "We have a very good opportunity there. But there are also some medical things that have to be cleared up. This doesn't mean some other team won't step in and sign him before we do. It's never done until a contract is signed."
