Well ... 3rd down conversions are about sustaining drives and eating clock.

Don't get me wrong... I love the quick strike nature of our offense. At the same time a long drive or three keeps our D off the field and that's got to be a good thing.

Well... kind of. If a team was really good maybe they consistently convert on first or second down and never get to third down. They still sustain drives this way. To see if they were really sustaining drives like this, and not just a quick strike offense, you would need to compare the number of first downs to other teams. If you look at this stat for the Redskins, we are tied for 8th best in the league.

Are you talking about women? I agree!

:laughing2

Thank you sir for that laugh. Much needed.

Speaking of efficient offenses, check out New England's clinic they are putting on tonight.

This.

...and really, is there any need to bash the defense at this point? We know they are shitty, and we knew that the moment we lost 4 starters on the squad. Nothing else to say about the defense or Haslett except they're doing the best they can with what they have to work with. That ship will get corrected in the off-season.

Going back to the penalties, the more I think about it the more I think this is the bigger issue at hand with our inconsistency. I wonder what the correlation between teams with the.....**** it, I'll DO IT LIVE MYSELF.

Wanted to see if there was a correlation between a teams penalties and their third down conversions. Probably inconclusive data here as I imagine that it depends on when those penalties were called and what side of the ball they were called on.

I think the penalties are a big problem and directly add to our third down % being low. We do a whole lot better at third and short. A lot of our drives seem to end when first down is either a penalty or a play gets blown up for a loss. Kyle has cut way back on those odd slow developing plays or the pure speed play to the short side of the field on third and short, although he still tries to be cute sometimes.

RG3 still doesnt read defenses like other veteran QB's do, so third and long, when teams can play strictly pass, is a big struggle for this him. We need to avoid that at all costs.

No, I just questioned your idea of "humming along". I just don't think it's efficient as it could be. I'm talking about this because there is nothing left to say about the defense. It's shitty. It's going to be shitty until the beginning of next season. Only thing left to discuss is offense and special teams.

No, I didn't. I'm not even going to go down that road again with you guys.

No I didn't.

Is exactly what was said.

I said luck has played a huge part. It has, but it also plays a part in everybody's record. Some of them get bad luck, others get good luck. We've been fortunate. I also said skill, talent and coaching were a reason we are in the position we are in.

The pattern is your uncanny ability to take something written and twist it into something that's not.

I'm not the only once noticing it.

I was not aware i was gaining a reputation as a word twister. I actually thought as a new guy that posts alot i was just on alot of peoples ignore lists.
Seems like the only twisting is when you sometimes twist your original statements into something that doesnt sound as ridiculous as it did the first time around.
Just sayin....
In all seriousness you obviously know the team, and you post some really great links and bring alot to the table imo on this forum.
What has me scratching my head is.....
You say the defense sucks and so its no use talking about it and so all thats left to talk about is the offense and special teams but to be hyper critical comes across as negative nancyish. Im surprised that in the midst of our current win streak you seem to want to be that way because honestly during the 3-6 period you seemed to be more of an optimist than you do now?
I was a huge "doubter" - not "hater" because i always gave Shanny credit for Denver and winning superbowls for an older Elway by installing his system there - of Shanny up until he finally opened my eyes (during the first Giants game - i saw it). Now in fully on board with what he is doing. I think that all the negatives u seem to weirdly want to point out now - are due to a young team with young players at all the key positions. Dont you think third down conversions and penalties will fix themselves as we mature as a team? Also dont you think that even with these "problems" we can still do something special this year?
Rant over.

So if instead of big plays on first or second down we were more consistent on third and long it would help our defense. You cant really expect to score much more than we are scoring is my point.

Dont get me wrong. im not complaining about our overall offensive production. 30 points is nothing to scoff at, and its a marked improvement over anything this team has seen since osaka...

but were winning games on the last drives when we could be BURRYING opponents. Every week teams are scoring 40-50 points. Why should we settle for less when we have the most lethal offensive weapon the world has ever seen. Imagine how productive our offense would be if we converted 50% of first downs like the patriots. Add that to rg3 making big plays with his arms and legs... We'd be near unstoppable.

It's hard to really kill our safeties at this point knowing they are both backups, and one of them is absolute garbage. We know our pass rush sucks balls. No AC, no Rak has left a huge void in the DL in terms of applying pressure and it's obvious something Kerrigan cannot overcome by himself. Our LBs have huge issues in coverage, and our main ILB ranks as one of the worst LBs in the game at this point. Secondary? Inconsistent and not put in a good position to succeed. Any time there is no pass rush on a QB, they are going to eat up a secondary and ours is no different. Also....**** all these idiots testing positives for drugs.

I am optimist. Very optimistic. We have a great chance at going to the playoffs and making noise. Now, do I think it's likely we would go far into the playoffs with such a bad defense? Probably not. Most SB winning teams generally have good defenses. Exceptions are defenses that either get a ton of turnovers (think Saints defense with GW).....or ones that bend but don't break. (think Pats defense in early/mid 2000's) But anything can happen once you are in. It's a one game elimination.

I hope so. I think penalties are generally a sign of discipline. That falls on the coaching staff in the end. We went from one of the least penalized teams last year to the most. It's what I call shooting ourselves in the foot. Almost like they are point shaving. Yes, I do think this will eventually get corrected, but it's not comforting while its still going on.

in 2010 we were 13th with 5.6 penalties per game, in 2011 we were 8th with 5.0 per game. This year we are 31 with 8.1 per game. I put a lot of the penalties on rookies and the team as a whole getting this offense down. I remember several false starts and illegal shifts early on, I know we still are having penalties, but I think another offseason and the familiarity that most of our players will have with this system will lead us back down in terms of the pre snap penalties that tend to kill drives.
