Could be that Pierce has already given the Skins the opportunity to match, and they decided it didn't fit their salary cap projections for the next few years. I doubt Pierce would totally forsake Williams, not to mention Snyder's checkbook. Barrow's supposedly going to be ready to practice during the offseason camps, and they've re-signed their young backups, so maybe throwing a lot of money at Pierce doesn't make sense, given those factors.
Very well could be, I hope not though.
SmootSmack 03-02-2005, 11:21 PM Yeah he's unrestricted, but he said recently that he would give the Skins a chance to match any offers. We'll see if he holds true to that, or maybe more importantly, will the Skins consider matching if they are indeed given that chance?
Yeah upon further inspection of the article I noticed that AP didn't sign but an "agreement is in place"
But I think we've talked before about how Marshall is a natural MLB. So maybe if Barrow doesn't pan out then you go Washington, Marshall, Arrington
wolfeskins 03-02-2005, 11:26 PM the skins could definately save some money by not resigning pierce, they already have barrow signed and ready. i'm not saying it's the right move but it is something to think about.

Well spoken and enough said farewell pierce. Borrow its time to earn your paycheck and lets draft a LB.
Sheriff Gonna Getcha 03-02-2005, 11:31 PM I don't think we should match it, but I defer to Gibbs and Williams.
Pierce's deal isn't far from what we gave Trotter. Pierce looks like a Pro Bowler, but he's only had one season. Plus, Williams made our defense look great with Wynn, Griffin, Salave'a, and Evans on our defensive line, LeMar Marshall at LB, and Clark at safety. Half our defensive starters were undrafted free agents. So, perhaps Pierce looked better than he really is.
Sheriff Gonna Getcha 03-02-2005, 11:33 PM Clifton Smith was signed at MLB and was a stud at Syracuse. He left early at Syracuse and many scouts felt he had the talent to develop into a second round draft pick. He has no experience in the Pros, but we seem to have developed a knack for getting good undrafted free agents on defense. Or, at the very least, Williams is good at masking holes on defense. With Barrow coming back, I'm not terrified by the loss of Pierce.
But, if we also lose Smoot, we are going to need some help on defense (either with the pass rush or in coverage).

We will also need soe help in run support, because Smoot is good at that as well.
SmootSmack 03-02-2005, 11:38 PM I think it's the intangibles I worry about losing when it comes to Pierce. He was basically a coach on the field, always aware of where his teammates had to be. What they were supposed to be doing, etc. Most players have a hard enough time just worrying about themselves
Daseal 03-02-2005, 11:38 PM He's not worth the money.

I'm not so worried about run support; Pierce was primarily a coverage linebacker and Smoot would try to tackle, but he'd come up limping after tackling scat backs.
