Schneed10 03-01-2005, 09:04 PM You think LaVar's contract isn't going to rape us in a few years? Schneed - Lavar comes in and stinks up the joint. How can he justify that salary? Yet if he doesn't produce we can't simply "fire him" we have to let him rot away on our bench making massive amounts of cash. All it takes is one injury to make a players salary devestating to the team.
Now you're talking about career-ending injuries, and that is just a matter of bad luck. There isn't anything that can be done about that.
Secondly, you're pretty much making my point for me. I was just saying that the system is set up so that teams can keep players for the long term if they want. There doesn't have to be complete player turnover each year. So if you want to keep a player and be loyal to him, you can fit him under the cap. But if you want to be loyal and also a winner, you better make sure the players you're keeping around are guys that are going to be worth it. If they turn out to suck, well that's your own damn fault for signing them, and you should pay the price. Like Dan Snyder did with Deion Sanders. That's the way it should be. There is room for loyalty, you just have to be smart about it.
Daseal 03-01-2005, 09:06 PM You mean the type of loyalty where we HAVE to renegotiate contracts every offseason to keep people? LaVars contract is massive and what if he falls off, or never becomes his old self from injury? (Just using hypothetical situations, not saying there's any basis for that statement.) His career isn't over, he's still a player, but certainly not worth what he's getting paid (there's a debate if he's worth it healthy) we can't just "dump" him BECAUSE the salary cap forces teams into large signing bonuses.
jdlea 03-01-2005, 09:16 PM #1, it's a business
#2, it's a business
It's business for the players too, when they want more money. Or they want to run better routes. How can you not blame the franchise? This whole game is business, but the problem I have is that a lot of people on this site wanna rip Coles or Samuels for not being "loyal." Loyalty has to be a 2 way street...and in the NFL that street doesn't exist.
jdlea 03-01-2005, 09:26 PM As for him being forced into CB duty...you don't think he could have just dogged it? Sucked at it? You don't think he could have had people believing he couldn't do it if he didn't want to? $5 million isn't that much in today's NFL. If any coach is worth $5 million, then I can definitely say that Troy Brown is worth $5 million for one year. What bothers me about this is the fact that I love Troy Brown and I like the Pats, but I don't think any organization deserves to win less than the Pats...except maybe us and the Cowboys.
They cut a ton of players who play their ass for them. Let me clarify one thing, when I say "organization," I don't mean Belichick or the coaches, I mean the GM and the personnel director. They cut Milloy, Law, and Brown. That bothers me. Just like the Boys cutting Emmitt and the Niners cutting Rice and the Raiders cutting Tim Brown. None of the 3 of them are particularly young, but they are all good players. I feel like they should have all ended their careers with the Pats, however that's not the way today's NFL works and that bothers me.
BigSKINBauer 03-01-2005, 09:29 PM its a business and the Patriots to me seem like they already know this next year will not be superbowl year for them.
What? they didn't not sign him b/c they thought they weren't going to the SB?
Every team competes because they want to win, i guess we should have just kicked players off when we knew it was over and the season hasn't even started for the patriots they could go 16-0 for all we know
so you think that they just came to the conclusion that they weren't gonna be the best of 16 teams in the afc and go to the superbowl and they just descided to roll over and die?
The patriots are still favorites for people to win the SB and i don't get what your saying
But it is true that it is business and it is cruel but coming from the Team concepted patriots?
I would love a player like this with the redskins and this is why so many of us want smoot. Troy is the ultimate team player, he played offense and defense and stepped up for the team when asked
jdlea 03-01-2005, 09:35 PM he played offense and defense and stepped up for the team when asked
My point exactly. I don't see how you let a guy like that go. And btw, they could have just extended his contract if they didn't want to pay him $5 mil
SKINSnCANES 03-01-2005, 09:40 PM we could sign troy brown and fill two needs, corner and wr, that would help with the cap. lol
That Guy 03-01-2005, 10:30 PM troy isnt worth 5mill in one year... the pats have probably the best gm/scouting staff in the nfl right now, so you have to trust that he wasnt worth the 5$mill and they made what they believe is the best move for their team... the league is set up to let this happen on purpose... its not like gauranteed contracts in the NBA.
I agree it's a cold move by the Pats, but it's the nature of the beast. I agree it sucks but I don't see the NFL doing anything about it anytime soon.
jdlea 03-01-2005, 11:37 PM I just think that there are a lot of players and then there are guys like Troy Brown. He's one of the classiest guys in the NFL. He sucked it up, stepped up and delivered. He put his balls on the line. I don't think I can put a price on having a guy like that if I had a team. I think he deserved more from the Pats.
