Kindoy 10-22-2012, 04:15 AM All i know is next year our top draft pick should be used on the best defensive back available, followed by either two corners or a corner and a safety somewhere in the other rounds of that draft. We should end up with a safety and two corners. Our DB's are out weakest unit BY FAR.
Hopefully our safeties look something like:
1. Merriweather
2. Gomes
3. Rookie
4. Doughty
5. Bernstine
And our corners look like:
1. Hall
2. Griffin
3. Crawford
4. Minnifield
5. Free Agent
6. Rookie
(with another rookie on the PS)
If its possible to carry that many it'd be nice. Even though i don't particularly like Doughty, he's a valuable back up (especially in times like these). I know the corners would be young, but overhaul is needed.
P.S. A new RT would be nice, wherever he may come from. Those rolling roundhouse kicks from Polombus are not cutting it.
jdc65 10-22-2012, 04:42 AM Well to be fair..The defense has been missing 4-5 starters all year long.
Merriweather
Jackson
Carriker
Orackpo
Cedric Griffin (Just got back today, and actually played really good)
Hard to tell how good this defense can be with all the pieces, or even half of those missing ones...
We do need a FS, and I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't address it in FA.
I think we can give Haz a break for Orakpo and Carriker being out as they were legitimate starters and producers. But Merriweather, Jackson, and even C.Griffin were either backups or disappointments prior to signing here. They likely would have been better than what the team currently has, but probably not a lot.
Coaching is also about making adjustments depending on personnel or game situations. Realizing a player's strengthes and weaknesses, and then utilizing those positive assets while minimizing the negative ones. I think it is fair to say that Haslett has maximized the weaknesses in the secondary for other teams to freely exploit.
DaShon Goldson isn't leaving San Fran in my opinion, but Jarius Byrd will leave Buffalo for a reasonable price. He should be a high priority this off season. Several good cornerbacks will also be available.
In my opinion, the team should draft offense, and sign free agents for defense. Free agents usually give a faster rate of return, while draftees can be groomed along with RGlll for longer term planning and cohesion.
jdc65 10-22-2012, 05:26 AM I think Robert would be Genuinely....insulted (and possibly amused) by your suggestion.
Well, I can't climb into anyone else's head, but it would be a normal human reaction to be considerably upset by today's loss and the way this season is playing out. Wouldn't you agree that it is very possible that Griffin feels let down by the team in general, with the front office specifically, and that the pressure on him to produce is unnecessarily high? Even if he never would admit such?
Of course, he is a rookie, and he was in the same situation at Baylor, so maybe he's ok with it.
AnonEmouse 10-22-2012, 05:33 AM I haven't posted on here for a while, so feel free to tell me to shut up.
Here in the UK, I've only seen 1 full Skins game, but thanks to Redzone, I get to see some. The Skins game was on a lot last night, and it seemed to me, the problems were:
1) No pass rush - of course with Rak and Carriker out not a surprise.
2) Pass D leaving BIG holes.
3) Fumbles. The INT was dumb, but you know there will be a few, especially from a rookie QB, but the fumbles (especially Moss') were so untimely.
For me, the biggest single mistake was by Williams on the TD to Cruz. He totally mis played the man and got caught flat footed. He should have been over the top on that and shutting it down deep. Yes, you can't really play cover 3 when you are trying to stop them from getting a FG with over a minute left, but you have to think protect deep first, so that even if you give up a gain, you don't give up a TD. Simply dumb.
Losing Davis will hurt, but its not like Paulsen didn't step up, and having Cooley back in the fold will help. Garcon has to get healthy for after the bye, so we have 2 deep threats. Only way to win more than we lose now is to outscore other teams, so we need scoring threats back on the team.
AnonEmouse 10-22-2012, 05:42 AM PS, to the Shanny haters, I'd suggest he has a 4 year plan. Build a good O, then repair the D.
He has Rak & Kerrigan. He needs a true monster pass rusher or NT on the line and 2 good pick ups in the secondary. That's all it would take to become a good D. We have a number of starters out, like the Ravens, and look at how they are doing.
Come on, can anyone honestly say after last season we'd look this competitive 7 games in and a decimated roster?

While I understand Merriweather and Jackson are no Ed Reeds, i'd consider them head and shoulders above what we have going now. Meriweather was in the pro bowl only a couple of years ago and Tanard Jackson has never been a slouch on the field - just a basket case off it. Call me crazy but i think our defense would look a whole lot better with those two in the mix.
Mechanix544 10-22-2012, 07:23 AM #Redskins' 32nd ranked pass defense: Allowed NFL-worst 7 passes of 40+ & NFL-worst 16 pass TD's, yield 155 more pass yds a game than #49ers.

The #Redskins' defense ranks 29th in the #NFL overall and dead-last against the pass
Fact is, our secondary (patchwork gang) is absolutely horrendous. Whoever said that they are actually playing well this season hasn't been watching the games I've been watching. B Merriweather and T Jackson would definitely be an upgrade, but Im not sure it would put us as a middle of the pack defense even...........we need youth and talent at that position, and with the league a pass happy league, those guys are worth a premium, and its hard as heck to find those diamonds in the rough. Something needs to happen, that much is for sure. It feels as if any college program with a competent QB could suit up and throw all over our asses, pick us apart.
Mechanix544 10-22-2012, 07:37 AM While I think Shanahan needs to go, I still tend to not want to see any knee jerk reactions this year. The secondary is a mess. He has proven that he can build a good offense around a good player and tailor it to said player. Lets now give him one more year to get the defense back on track. Cutting bait right now would be disastrous, but I believe that RG3's performance has ensured that Shanahan will be around a bit longer than some people would like. I think he is vastly overrated, but I am not above getting behind the man and rooting for him to become what he once was. But over three years in, and our defense completely changed and in shambles, the patience is starting to wear a bit thin. I am a realist, but above that, I am a redskins fan, and I wish him the best. Now Jim Haslett, on the other hand.............
irish 10-22-2012, 08:20 AM You cant turn over the ball as much as the Skins did and expect to win but with that said they were very much in position to win that game the the secondary let one go straight through them. My goat horns go to the secondary.
REDSKINS4ever 10-22-2012, 08:36 AM I just can't get over the way the defensive unit has regressed. The Redskins have gone up against some pretty good quarterbacks every week so far, but the defensive backfield is gift wrapping too many TD catches to the opposing offenses.
