Mara wasn't THE MAIN reason we got penalized. He, along with a MAJORITY of owners in the league voted that we get penalized. He came out to speak since he is one of the head owners in the league and he and Kraft were 2 of the couple of owners that would speak 'for the owners' during the lockout. Whether he was speaking from his opinion or other owners opinions or both, he wasn't the guy, the reason, we got docked all that money. Sure he said "They could (or should) of lost draft picks for what they did" but again, we didn't, it was his opinion, and it may have been the opinion of the league.link (http://www.realredskins.com/rich-tandlers-real-redsk/2012/03/parsing-the-nfls-cap-penalty-statement.html)

"Let’s start with “the NFL’s recent agreement with the NFL Players Association.” Exactly who in the NFL and in the Players Association agreed to this is unclear. We know that the full ownership of the NFL did not take a vote on it. It has been reported that the NFL Executive Committee, headed by Giants owner John Mara, a prime beneficiary of the penalties against Dallas and Washington, negotiated the sanctions with the union. But Jerry Jones is a member of that committee and he knew nothing about it.

So it appears that part of a committee made up of part of the NFL owners can change the CBA. And that committee is chaired by Mara, someone who clearly should recuse himself from any decision that would severely penalize two other teams in his division. "

-----------------------------

Another link (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/10/02/leagues-latest-collusion-brief-is-a-two-edged-sword/).

“I thought the penalties imposed were proper,” Mara said. “What they did was in violation of the spirit of the salary cap. They attempted to take advantage of a one-year loophole, and quite frankly, I think they’re lucky they didn’t lose draft picks. . . . They attempted to take advantage of it knowing full well there would be consequences.”

-----------------------------

I understand the players union head signed off on the "penalty". I still don't understand why the owners weren't busted for collusion on this issue.

F Mara. Only reason he has Jerry Reese and the Giants is that he inherited them from daddy. Then he pulls the "spirit of the salary cap" crap in an uncapped year? Typical example of a guy who thinks he can do what he wants, just because he's a member of the "lucky sperm club". (born into money)

Junior Seau: Song of sorrow | UTSanDiego.com (http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/oct/14/junior-seau-real-story/?page=1#article)

Excellent story here on Junior Seau and the person he was before his suicide. It's a very in-depth look at what his life was like growing up as well as who he was after his retirement from football.

And it's also part of a series that the paper is doing on Junior Seau, I think the next article will come out next week. I'm looking forward to reading that too.

Hence why I said give or take. Either way, it's a huge loss for the Ravens. I just don't see them being the same after this.

The Ravens offense could easily carry the team, but for some reason they tend to get too pass happy when they really don't need to. I know they have good WRs and Torrey Smith will take the top off any defense. But it seems sometimes that they pass more than they need to.

The Ravens D is pretty solid but they are getting old. I think they will be okay, but losing Webb is huge. And Lewis is pretty much like Fletcher, a solid tackler and the heart of the defense. They can still be a playoff team, but it will depend a lot on their offense now.

You don't have to tell me that, Danny and co. Know who threw them under the bus and will respond accordingly.

I think NE will have a hard time getting to the super bowl, that d is just bad and Houston is so good all around, as is Baltimore.

Sf looks like a team waiting to replace Smith with kaep IMO.

Thats why I keep saying that Denver is a great team, they've played the best in the NFL (Atlanta and Houston) and played them close coming back. I think they get their stuff together. Houston is still a great team--even after this packer game and losing Cushing for the year. I have that bad feeling about New England since they are starting to get balanced in their running game and the fact that division is crap.

SF, if they had gotten Manning would have been the better option. Like one of the analysts said today, Alex Smith can't bring the team back when their down. He's just a game manager which is enough to help you get to the playoffs.

And Baltimore is gonna get Suggs back, but A) he won't be 100% for a while B) they may have lost their best defensive player (Webb) and their star player Ray Lewis, for the season..ouch. But hey that defense has Ed Reed and it has a good offense now that makes up for its bad defense.

We also have a GREAT chance of beating Pitt and Baltimore seeing how bad those 2 teams are ATM (Cleveland scares me more than them)

After this weekend, I honestly cannot say who is the best team in the NFL. Ravens defense got shredded up by the Cowboys run game and SF just got shredded period.

I would say the NY Giants are the best team since they won the SB and destroyed this weeks best team, the 49ers.

Add to that Atlanta barely getting a win over the Raiders and the Texans are getting killed by the Packers.
