What about replacing Patrick Johnson

When I posed the question, it was more of a 'we have Gardner, Coles, Jacobs as 1, 2 & 3 (depending on McCants), so do we replace Johnson via draft or FA?' question, than it was about worrying about his departure.

IMHO if we have a talented WR available when we pick in the 5th, someone who can be a solid backup at least, then we may be able to lose McCants and use the spare 5th for another need, rather than spending a lot of money (a la B Johnson) keeping a backup on the team.

A quick and easy way to upgrade the D Line, but he won't make an impact this year. I'm not impressed by any of the D Linemen.

Yeah, he went to the Bengals, I don't know what I was thinking. Thanks for reminding me of that kickoff return, I was shocked when he ran out. In his defense we had quite a better picture of what he had left to do than he did.

I still think Russell may come through for the 4th of 5th slot and from what I hear Cloman certainly could.

Cloman might develop into an NFL receiver. Joe Gibbs has been known to patiently develop players with raw talent. He won't play them while they are developing, but he keeps them around and lets them hone their skills and then plays them.

However, I am pessimistic about Cliff Russell. He has "Darrell Green speed" and that is why he has been kept around as long as he has; you can't teach people to run that fast. HOWEVER, he has the hands of the Venus de Milo. That was the knock on him coming out of college and if you happened to see him in training camp or in some pre-season games, you would come to the conclusion that he still has not learned how to catch a football reliably.

It's really nice to have a guy who is a "deep threat" and can run by the defenders. It is a whole lot better if that same guy can actually catch more than half the balls that hit him on the hands... :(

Cloman was impressive in camp last year and he could definitely be a darkhorse this year and win a spot on the team.

I think Russell will be cut, the guy is all speed and not much else. He was a Spurrier guy. Gibbs is interested in the intangibles a player brings, not 40 times.

As far as Russell goes, my question is how are his legs? If his knee is a weakness and his hands aren't that good, should we really waste a roster spot on him, if there are other WR's out there who can catch? I agree it's great to have a speedster, but if all he can do is run downfield and drop the ball, what's the point?

However, anyone know if he could be a possible conversion to DB? IF he can cover, and has such good speed, who cares if he can't catch?

You took the word's right out of my mouth, with the kind of speed he has and lack of WR skill's it probabaly wouldn't be a bad idea to take a look at him at DB.

good point about changing him to a DB. I'm a little curious how his special team play was last year. I really like Cloman and would take him any day, but I think our coaches should maybe worth with Russell some.
