I worshipped Bo during his NFL days. My family has a long history with Auburn, so it was a natural fit for me to be a Bo Jackson fan. I read his biographies, collected his cards-- I even remember a Saturday morning cartoon that featured Bo, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky, and I watched every episode. But my main form of worship was pounding the 'A' button on my NES controller into submission as I drove "cyber-Bo" through piles of defenders on 90-yard gallops, tossing bodies through the air as he blasted his way to the end zone in Tecmo Super Bowl. I think I was probably one of those gamers that approached 1,000 yards rushing in a single game on at least one occasion.

Being the loyal Bo fan that I am, I don't like the way this writer portrays the real Bo as a mere shadow of his cyber counterpart. Bo Jackson as a player was larger than life. He was one of those rare football players-- Barry Sanders is another that comes to mind-- that made you sit on the edge of your seat when you watched him play, because you knew that on any given play, he could take it the distance-- even when it looked like the defense had him locked down, cornered and beaten. You knew that Bo could find a way out of it. When he did, it was breathtaking to watch.

Bo was definitely a once in a lifetime kind of athlete.

I never realized it, but he never had a 1000 yard season in the NFL! One can only wonder the kind of numbers he would have put up had he committed fully to football. 5.4 yards per pop is pretty crazy

I used to play Tecmo religiously. Loved it. Dennis Gentry was my sleeper star. He never let me down. Amazing how these game have involved. Seems like only yesterday I was in awe over how "real" Nintendo's 10-Yard Fight looked (in retrospect that had to be one of the slowest games ever), then Tecmo and Super Tecmo and now Madden! Unbelievable

Crisp, I agree completely. I was always on the edge of my seat for Bo and Barry. Even when Bo was at the plate in baseball. I've been lucky to see some of the greats play live, Jordan,Gretzky, A-Rod. For my money though there is no athlete I ever enjoyed watching more, whether on tv or live, than Barry Sanders.

Teacmo Superbowl was the freaking sh*t. That game was so awsome, freaking Barry Sanders and LT were unstoppable Monsters. That game was awsome

Other than the Skins, the only team I ever rooted for was the Raiders. And that was only because of Bo Jackson. Its a shame his career ended early. His 5.4 avg was highly regarded, which makes traiding for CP, with his 5.5 yd avg look even better!!

yeah I found that amazing with as good of a runner he was, but then again Marcus Allen was on the team during that time and got quite a few of the carries as well. I can't begin to imagine what his stats would have been like had he been just devoted to football, he was the main rb for a team, and he hadn't suffered that freak injury to his hip. But he was also amazing to watch in basebal with almost a perfect blend of speed and strength and I love to see the replay of him breaking the bat over his knee. If I remember right he broke it on the barrel and not the handle which is pretty freakin thick. I think the last I'd heard about him before this article was a year or 2 ago when he went back to school and got his degree and it's always good to hear about athletes doing that after they retire or working on their degree during the offseason like I think Shaq and Vince Carter did.
