Well now the 2 redskins i have grown to love are gone. CP and now Cooley. It is a very hard pill to swallow. I dont even want to buy a jersey for the fear that they will be released or traded the next week. Guess this is the way the new NFL is going. I am sure he could have contributed in some form or fashion and would have helped all these young TEs learn the position. I understand Shanny wants to take this team in a different direction but it is still disapointing as a diehard Redskin fan. I hope that Shanny does get this team to the promise land but i still question some of his moves. Now i just have Moss to root for as he is still one of my favorites but how long before he is cut? I guess its time to get some new favorites but i just love the old reliable ones. Anyways im done with my rant and HTTR and may we have great success in the future with or without my favorite players

I loved Billy Kilmer. He was my first football hero gritty, hard drinking and a guy who was all Redskin. I hated it when he was done.

I loved John Riggins. He was tough, gritty and a character like no other a d a guy who was all Redskin. I hated it when he was done

Ditto Cooley.

Soon, new players will arise who will win our affections. Cooley's left, sad though it may be, new favorites will arise.

Ahh so sad to hear Chris Cooley has been released. I'd lying if I said that this was a complete shock. Ever since right after Cooleys last pro bowl ('10 ?) He's gone down hill and let injuries catch up to him. He also looked less motivated when he was playing and slower. Fan favorites tenures need to end sometime, it was one hell of a ride Cooley, now good luck and go to a team that isn't in the NFC East and isn't the Steelers or Patriots.

This was always one of my favorite Cooley videos, showed great team bonding outside of football.

Cooley lasted a bit longer (couple weeks) than I thought he would

I hated Cooley. Oh I love the fans. Oh being a Redskin is great. Oh here let me open my home to you guys and give you guys unique insight into the game. What a jerk. He deserves to be resigned so we can just cut him again shortly thereafter.

Well, I know this isn't a popular opinion around here, but I don't mind seeing him go. I was never a fan of the blog and of all the non-football attention he managed to grab. It was always funny when he'd show up to practice in those silly shorts, but it always seemed to me to suggest he wasn't taking practice as seriously as he should have been. And reading about his drunken escapades on his blog sent a strange message to me about his priorities. Of course, to average football fans, the Cooley persona went over great, because it made him relatable, by I don't want my players to be relatable. I've been told on this site before to lighten up about criticizing Cooley, and I understand why I would have been told that. Nevertheless, I personally feel that for the past decade, the players in Washington have not been as committed to winning as the players on the more successful teams, that the collective approach and attitude from the locker room was far too laid back and not serious enough (Club Med?). For me, Cooley's off-field persona kind of personified that, even if he did always say the right things. I'll give the man credit, from his post-game interviews to his hysterical blog posts, he always knew what to say to make Redskin fans love him.

Great post. As a kid I grew up in the eighties and nintetie. Lots of players to love and they have all gone. This is the way of the sport we love so much.

Rak and Kerrigan are a couple of new guys to love, and we may have a great qb when it's all said and done.

Imagine how much worse you would feel if we actually won something with CP and Cooley, as we did with Art Monk and Darrell Green. Monk and Green were also great Redskins and good good people like Cooley. Add winning multiple Championships and the loss of them hurts even more.

For all the obvious reasons, this is one of the tougher releases to stomach of any Washington Redskins player since I've been following the team. It was the right move though.
