I remember 2 years back people thought that Torain wouldn't work out because of his lackluster performance in the preseason (28 carries 94 yards 3.4 avg). Later that same season he ended up dominating in a lot of the games where he was healthy. I think that Running Backs that have a decent chance of making the team usually play at 50% during the preseason to keep themselves healthy for when the games actually count.
