I would match if its not extraordinary. BJ may have been a very good special teamer, but you don't take a $2.2 million cap hit for a very good special teamer. BJ was an undrafted free agent, and I'm sure there will be plenty of other undrafted free agents this spring that the Redskins could sign to easily take his place. Backup fullbacks/special teamers worth a $2.2 million cap hit don't grow on trees... in fact, they don't exist. Backup fullbacks/special teamers were meant to be undrafted free agents making the league minimum. When they start looking for more money than that, you let them go find it, and then you sign yourself another hungry, undrafted free agent and pay him the league minimum to take the other guy's place. BJ is not Mike Alstott or Jimmy Kleinsasser, nor is he a Mark Kelso or Bill Bates or Brian Mitchell, or any of the other standout special teamers who would have been worth a $2.2 million cap hit. He's done nothing to warrant that kind of attention or money. Let him walk, wish him well, and find yourself another one just like him for a fifth of the price. Redskins_P 03-22-2004, 04:43 PM He is definitely replaceable. Drkstar 03-22-2004, 04:51 PM BJ may have been a very good special teamer, but you don't take a $2.2 million cap hit for a very good special teamer.. why not? we did it for Chad Morton did we not?!? Redskins_P 03-22-2004, 05:06 PM We did do it for Chad Morton, but he is more of a threat than B.Johnson. skinsfanthru&thru 03-22-2004, 05:50 PM johnson wasn't a returner or anything unlike morton who has a decent chance to hit a homerun any time he fields the ball. plus morton did more on offense as well than Johnson did. they r two different classes of players and I'd morton every time over johnson. joecrisp 03-22-2004, 07:38 PM why not? we did it for Chad Morton did we not?!? Does Bryan Johnson field kicks? Did he ever return two kickoffs for TDs in the same game? Return men are a different class of special teamers. Chad Morton was paid the big bucks because he had shown the ability to take kicks back for TDs the year before, and the Redskins had lacked a legitimate return man since Brian Mitchell (I won't even bring up the name of that other guy that replaced Mitchell). Teams do pay big bucks for kick returners they expect to bring excitement and energy to their special teams play. They present an X-factor that can put points on the board and fans in the seats. It generally takes a unique player to be a legitimate scoring threat on kick returns, and that's why they're often paid more than other special teamers. Players like Bryan Johnson, while playing an integral role on special teams, are generally a dime a dozen. I'm sure you know all of these things, Drkstar, but you asked the question, so I gave you an answer. |
