The question is... Would we trade Gardner for Davis straight up? The answer is...Yes.
Ignoring market concerns I'd say go with Davis because at least he can catch the damn ball and even he is hurt then at least he wont be dropping balls. All kidding aside I think gardner has worn out his welcome in DC and getting a guy like Dvais for a 4th would be nice if we could cut Gardner loose for a 3rd. I think the drop off in talent is negligible if there is any and Davis could make a sort of home coming to the DC/VA/MD area. He has speed, we need it. He has some size, that offsets losing Gardner. Go for it. He's probably better than the 4th round player we'd draft.

if we go with davis, we are not getting a wr in the first round. and it makes no sense if we do that cuz how are we gonna get taylor more time to develope if he is 4th string again? anyway, i like the idea, yet, i want more of a size wr with enough speed
I actually think we would still go WR in the first even if we did this. I am assuming we don't make a deal like this unless we can get a 3rd or better for Gardner. That gives us picks in 1,3,3,4,6,7 and we trade the 4th for Davis hypothetically giving us picks in 1,3,3,6,7 meaning we've upgraded our 4th to a 3rd and swapped Gardner for Davis. I like Davis better at this point mainly because I dislike Gardner so much.
Still I don't think they make this deal thinking Davis ia the answer. I mean we haven't really done much to improve the WR core this was more of a lateral move in talent for an upgrade in that 4th pick. Going WR in the 1st still makes sense.
Imagine a WR core of
M Williams
L Coles
Jacobs
Davis
Thrash
Compared to
L Coles
Gardner
Jacobs
Thrash
McCants
Thats an upgrade at every spot except the third spot where Jacobs remains adnd will hopefully get better anyways. Sounds like a good plan to me.

FRPLG, I like that lineup w/ Davis as our #3 reciever (slot). Jacobs would have an expanded role also.

Jacobs has so much talent. He played will in the MN game - I think we should sign him to a long extention, provided he'll come fairly cheap, THEN give him a bigger role!

I'd still like to see us go after Burress or Muhammad, however I doubt we will have the cap space to do so. We need a BIG play reciever (other than Coles) If anyone is going to take us seriously this season. A good, fast route runner with good hands...this may not be Plax, but atleast he would be a deep threat.

I also think that we have to be prepared for Laveranues Coles possibly never returning to form from his injury. If that is the case, then I think that he may be released - or traded if it is possible - before 2006.
It could be that he could be seen to earn too much money to be a #2 wide receiver indefinitely without improvement in his health. This may be Coles' last chance to be the player we hoped he could be, but through no fault of his own, hasn't been able to.
With this in mind as well, we have to develop players for the future at WR.

Lets bring him here and compete with taylor jacobs for the 3rd wr slot
