Shanahan plans to have five or six running backs on the roster entering training camp this summer, he said. Roy Helu and Evan Royster capably replaced Hightower last season as rookies. Tailback Tristan Davis is on the roster after finishing last season on the practice squad.

Looks like we're drafting one or two backs this year.

None of those guys except Demps or Rainey. If we get a RB it will be one of the guys I mentioned here.

Vick Ballard of Mississippi State (http://www.profootballweekly.com/prospects/player/vick-ballard-28/) and Edwin Baker of Michigan State (http://www.profootballweekly.com/prospects/player/edwin-baker-4/) grade out similarly to Helu. Decent vision, good speed, similar pre-draft grade.

Obviously Shanahan might not be looking for the next Roy Helu exactly but those two seem like candidates.

Other mid-round guys to look out for due to above average vision and one-cut run ability:

Chris Rainey - Florida (http://www.profootballweekly.com/prospects/player/chris-rainey-1/)

Ronnie Hillman - San Diego State (http://www.profootballweekly.com/prospects/player/ronnie-hillman-13/)

Lennon Creer - Louisiana Tech (http://www.profootballweekly.com/prospects/player/lennon-creer-5/)

And the highest rated vision among potential Shanahan Backs

Tauren Poole - Tennessee (http://www.profootballweekly.com/prospects/player/tauren-poole-28/)

The following backs all are reported to have very good vision but are considered a risk to go undrafted. All are falling due to durability concerns. Shanahan has picked guys graded in this range before (Royster and Torain)

Jonas Gray - Notre Dame (http://www.profootballweekly.com/prospects/player/jonas-gray-25/)

Jeff Demps - Florida (http://www.profootballweekly.com/prospects/player/jeffery-demps-28/)

Jewel Hampton - Southern Illinois (http://www.profootballweekly.com/prospects/player/jewel-hampton-27/)

Bryce Brown - Kansas State (http://www.profootballweekly.com/prospects/player/bryce-brown-8/)

In short anyone from Florida should make us happy as should a certain back from Tennessee.

If Hightower is healthy hell yeah you bring him back. He runs very hard and is good all around. Helu makes a great change of pace back in this scenario. If Hightower has lost a step because of the knee injury I think we have to add another starter to the roster.

I'm not confident in Royster. He strikes me as a backup.

Why does everything have to be your way? BTW Vic Ballard can't keep his balance. Running into tripods and what not.

...even w/ a healthy Hightower or other legit starter added to the roster I'd like to see Helu get equal carries. Helu has the potential to be very very good. When I watched him (live) in Seattle last year I saw him do some things you just don't see every Sunday.

For practical reasons I don't think that we can draft Rainey. His ego is too big to physically fit into the locker room.

Running backs?
We drafted two and traded for another last year.
WTF would we waste picks on a RB this year?

Helu should enter the season as the starter. Period. Anything else doesn't make sense.
