I hope some of these comments are being sarcastic, if not wow. This was the first year running the 3-4 defense right? They had little to no help from a terrible offense. Starting defense included a rookie OLB(Kerrigan), 2nd year ILB(Riley), rookie safety for half the season(Gomes), Reed Doughty (WHERE ARE THE PHOTOS OF DANNY WITH A HOOKER?)
Our defense will be better this season because of the youngsters improving and the whole team being in the system for another season.

2012 will be third season in the 3-4. There was improvement in year two...

Also known as the John Beck argument.
Where is that fanarchist guy when you need him?

There is some truth in that an improved O would bring about nice things for the D.....AND, although not SB ready this year, I do expect significant improvement in that area.I think the offense will be improved this year. The Redskins gamble that they will be much improved. I think they're going in the right direction, speaking very generally.
But I think this is the 'year of improvement' in Shanahan's offense. Would be smart to pair that with an uptick in defense and special teams as well.

It will be mediocre. 15th place in scoring and awful against the pass.

Fans often associate a long injury list with bad luck, but never consider good luck when star players have healthy seasons. Orakpo and Kerrigan were really quite healthy all year. At least til Orakpo got hurt in Philadelphia to end the season.

so, should we have paid $10mill this year (to LL and OA) to watch gomes and doughty start another 13 games for us? that doesn't sound like a better idea at all.

If I was going that route, I would have moved on from Doughty, upgraded to a starter, and turned Atogwe into a sub package player who is reliable if he needed to start. Then if the special teams unit requires it, I would roster a fifth safety.
That player would have been Dwight Lowery, Brodney Pool, or Mike Adams, but all are signed now. I also would consider signing a corner and moving him.
Gomes is more than enough of a contingency plan for Landry at this point in his career.

this defense will be just fine and better than mediocre ... we continue to make smart moves .. resigning Carriker (check) .. letting Landry be Landry (check) ... Get Jenkins healthy (hopeful check) ... Keep D-Hall (check even though he gets hated on big time) ... Let OJ go (check) ... umm Orakpo, Kerrigan, Riley, Gomes, Neild all solid young players .. Josh Wilson will be better this year ... signing Merriweather was a great move .. love this team

Lol no. With their recent history, Doughty and Gomes would be starting anyway for a good portion of the season because Landry and Atogwe are rather injury prone.
