The Goat 03-19-2012, 04:40 PM I agree, the myth of us having a horrible offensive line that needs an overhaul is greatly exaggerated. If healthy our full OL is probably in the middle of the pack across the NFL. The big question is Jamaal Brown, what will he have left in 2012 to bring to RT. While he still has a long ways to go to be considered an unquestioned starter, I saw enough of Willie Smith to give him starter reps in the OTA's and training camp at RT. The interior is ok, not great but not horrible either. Having RGIII will make them look better, Grossman was a sitting duck back there.
...he certainly waddles like a duck.
I recently read an interesting perspective in regards to our O-Line but right now I'm having trouble placing it.
Anyhow, basically it goes that in 2011 we gave up 5 less sacks then we did in 2010. Now 5 sacks might not seem like that great a drop but when you consider that we lost Kory L for the season, Trent Williams for 6 games, Tim Hightower for the season (aka our top pass protection back), and Jammal Brown for 4 games well safe to say a 5 sack drop looks all the more impressive.
The fact of the matter is we might not necessarily need starters but rather we need to focus on finding better backups or at least focus more on improving the ones we have.

Beck didn't do anything in his starts to help the sack numbers either. A lot of those sacks were his fault.

10 of them in one game. Normally, 4 sacks is indicative of a bad sack day, so let's just say 6-8 of them were Beck's fault.
Mechanix544 03-19-2012, 05:33 PM True 30 defenses, like the Steelers and the Redskins are already pretty multiple as it is. Our sub package is a 40 front (as you mentioned) and typically involves both OLBs with their hands in the dird.
I would like to see them get more multiple with that sub package. What they do a lot of is they will overload one side with an SS pressure to force the offense to adjust their protection/go hot with the football. But the fact that we pretty much have to wait for a passing down to use that wrinkle suggests that we're missing opportunities to get our best personnel on the field in earlier downs.
Ever since the first six games Haslett was coordinator, we haven't seen much interior pass rush. Sure, Fletcher or McIntosh will come with delayed A-gap pressure a lot, but we live and die with straight four man rushes and defensive overloads. I feel like if we were more multiple, we could acquire more useful personnel that creates favorable match-ups for our rushers.
That's the opportunity we are missing on defense right now. In our sub packages, we should be attacking the weak links of the opponent's pass protection. Instead, we're trying to isolate the tackles on the edge, and/or get a free rusher. Nothing wrong with that, just missing opportunities to be even better.
New word for the list. Called it!!!

You could also attribute that to the stronger running game with Royster and Helu and Hightower, as well as a better grasping of the offensive scheme by the line, even though it was definitely decimated by injuries. Very optimistic though. Love to go back down 5 more this season, or even more!!
KI Skins Fan 03-19-2012, 06:02 PM Where are the rest of the Redskins' FA signings? Is anyone else visiting us? Is Bruce Allen napping?
Wake up, Bruce! We need you to get us more players.

We're broke and who's out there that you would want? Besides Fletch.

Wow, really? It amazes me how desperate this fan base gets around this time. We have a young core group, lets build them up, use the draft (yes we still have 7 picks in it) and develop this team.
(unless you were being sarcastic, in which case i agree as well)
iRepDMV 03-19-2012, 07:06 PM Lets build this ship through the draft! LETS GOO
