I'd like to see us use more traditional 4 man fronts, especially with hybrid defenses being all the rage in the league now a days.

Just every now and then it would be nice to see both Kerrigan and Orakpo lining up as traditional defensive ends with their hands in the dirt and two DT's inside (presumably Carriker and Cofield). I know we run 4 man fronts some times but thats usually with Orakpo and Kerrigan in a two point stance.

I think that's an excellent idea. Send a note to Haslett.

Our sub package is a 40 front (as you mentioned) and typically involves both OLBs with their hands in the dird.

I would like to see them get more multiple with that sub package. What they do a lot of is they will overload one side with an SS pressure to force the offense to adjust their protection/go hot with the football. But the fact that we pretty much have to wait for a passing down to use that wrinkle suggests that we're missing opportunities to get our best personnel on the field in earlier downs.

Ever since the first six games Haslett was coordinator, we haven't seen much interior pass rush. Sure, Fletcher or McIntosh will come with delayed A-gap pressure a lot, but we live and die with straight four man rushes and defensive overloads. I feel like if we were more multiple, we could acquire more useful personnel that creates favorable match-ups for our rushers.

That's the opportunity we are missing on defense right now. In our sub packages, we should be attacking the weak links of the opponent's pass protection. Instead, we're trying to isolate the tackles on the edge, and/or get a free rusher. Nothing wrong with that, just missing opportunities to be even better.

What's the knock on our O-line anyway? They got pushed around some but we aren't all that bad. The two young guys Hurt and Smith played really well. I was thinking, why go out and pay millions for guys in free agency when we can just insert Smith at RT? (even though Jamaal Brown isn't all that bad) and maybe Hurt at LG or RG? Then we can add a couple of cheap veterans through FA and add more depth through the draft. Just my opinion.

You might have numbers which disprove what I can only offer in impressions...but in my memory times when both Rak and Kerrigan had their hands in the dirt were rare at best.

Already mentioned in the NFL FA thread but since it's Redskin related, Donte Stallworth has signed with the Pats.

Also, Laron Landry is joining the Jets

Glad it's not Philly just in case he decides to be healthy.

I recently read an interesting perspective in regards to our O-Line but right now I'm having trouble placing it.

Anyhow, basically it goes that in 2011 we gave up 5 less sacks then we did in 2010. Now 5 sacks might not seem like that great a drop but when you consider that we lost Kory L for the season, Trent Williams for 6 games, Tim Hightower for the season (aka our top pass protection back), and Jammal Brown for 4 games well safe to say a 5 sack drop looks all the more impressive.

The fact of the matter is we might not necessarily need starters but rather we need to focus on finding better backups or at least focus more on improving the ones we have.

*Shamless plug for Florida State tackle Andrew Datko

Yay, and yay. This is a win/win for us. Err maybe I meant lose/lose. ;)

I guess we get nothing for losing Landry cause he was a FA right?

Isn't some of that reliant on having a better secondary also? I think we do an adequate job of pressure but our coverage schemes on the back end when we send pressure seem very suspect. Too many times when we send 5, 6 or 7 the other team ends up having receivers running free with no DB in sight to come up and make a quick tackle or in position to make a play on the ball.

*Shamless plug for Florida State tackle Andrew Datko I agree, the myth of us having a horrible offensive line that needs an overhaul is greatly exaggerated. If healthy our full OL is probably in the middle of the pack across the NFL. The big question is Jamaal Brown, what will he have left in 2012 to bring to RT. While he still has a long ways to go to be considered an unquestioned starter, I saw enough of Willie Smith to give him starter reps in the OTA's and training camp at RT. The interior is ok, not great but not horrible either. Having RGIII will make them look better, Grossman was a sitting duck back there.
