artmonkforhallofamein07 03-03-2012, 01:41 AM I really don't want to talk about Doughty. I know some of you guys really like him, but I can't believe we haven't tried to replace that spot in the last couple of years. He is a fair safety to some extent, but by no means a good player.
Ruhskins 03-03-2012, 01:49 AM Cap room doesn't mean you overpay guys for that aren't producing up to their salary. Do you think Bill Gates pays a janitor 400k a year? Nope. Why not? He has the money to do so if he chose. It's about doing smart business which is something we have long neglected. Cooley is going to have to restructure to stay, which I'm quite positive he will. He knows that Fred Davis is the #1 now, so he'll be a great guy coming off the bench or in the 2 TE set.
My comments were in response to a comment that made it sound like we were over the cap and desperately needed to restructure a whole bunch of contracts to get under the cap.
Now, Cooley has had injuries that have affected his play, hopefully he's healthy and can go back to his old self. He's 29, will be 30 by the time the season starts, so it is not like we are talking about some over the hill guy. While yes, I am sure the team would like if he restructured and it may happen, however, I personally don't think is a must situation.
It's funny though, when a player gets a bit older and the team wants to move on from them, we praise the teams for making a sound business decision. Yet when a player who outperforms his contract and wants to get more money, we say "shut up and just play ball".

You and I probably wouldn't even have an opinion on Doughty if Landry, Kareem Moore, and Atogwe have been reasonable healthy over the past three/four seasons.
artmonkforhallofamein07 03-03-2012, 02:08 AM That's why I would assume there would be a reason to find a replacement. You know he will play with the guys in front of him.

I would rather they find a replacement for the guys in front of him. Although, the coaches seem to have faith in him for some reason, he seems to be going into the Rabach zone (a player that was kept from year to year despite their poor abilities).
SBXVII 03-03-2012, 04:41 AM Yeah it looks like LL will not be here next season
>~ yay.....should have gotten the surgery~<
Great personality, can take a hit can dish out a hit..... when he's in position and not behind the play. Come on folks, he never could cover as a FS and when he was shift closer to the LOS and basically used as a SS he couldn't cover there either. When your supposed to be the last man or last obstical how are you going to end up behind the play chasing it down half the time?
He's like that cousin everyone has that you love cause he's family but some how seems to screw up occasionally. Then to decide your not going to have surgery in hopes you'll come back 100%, but didn't. Then knowing you had a bad season your going to decide not to have surgery yet again and more then likely come back no more healthier then before? Bye. Good luck. Hope we don't have to play against you but if we do we will put you in situation where you have to cover someone.

A healthy LL has a high value, IMO. But I doubt that he'll stay healthy unless he has surgery to repair his achilles problem which apparently has not healed completely using alternative healing methods.
An injured LL on the bench has no value.
I think I'd offer him a multi-year deal contingent on his having surgery on his achilles. If he again refuses to have the surgery, I'd probably offer him a one-year deal at a lower salary as long as there is a chance that he might get well enough to play by continuing non-surgical treatments. If he won't accept the one-year deal, then he can sign elsewhere.
I'd be reluctant to just let him go without attempting to work out a deal.

I am not one of those people. I have always thought that players should be able to get out of their contracts if they over perform. Why? Because the owners can cut them at will without having to pay them. Not sure why players even agree to such standards in the CBA. If a team can release a player during a contract and not have to pay him, then a player should be able to void his contract when he isn't paid appropriately.

gomes, moore, atogwe, horton, maybe barnes to an extent... we've tried to replace him, but everyone else is either worse or gets hurt.
