Looking at all the UFA's at the CB position at least helps ease the pain if Smoots bails for the $$$
There are several UFA's at CB that can step in & play close if not at the same level that Smoots played.
Here's a few I found at: http://www.nflfans.com/draft/
NFC PLAYERS
Aaron Beasley DB UFA Falcons
Kevin Mathis DB UFA Falcons
Allen Rossum DB UFA Falcons
Renaldo Hill DB UFA Cardinals
Brian Williams DB RFA Vikings
Kevin Mathis DB UFA Falcons
Unfortunately, Smoot's numbers are far superior to any FA's available with a 4 year career:
DEFENSIVE STATS
Year Team G Total Tckl Ast Sacks Int Yds Avg Lg TD Pass Def
2001 Washington Redskins 14 33 30.0 3 0 5 36 7.2 36 0 7
2002 Washington Redskins 16 61 49.0 12 0 4 12 3.0 12 0 10
2003 Washington Redskins 15 57 50.0 7 0 4 35 8.8 35 0 5
2004 Washington Redskins 15 59 53.0 6 0 3 17 5.7 17 0 10
TOTAL 60 210 182.0 28 0 16 100 6.2 36 0 32
How do you see Smoot gone...? Who else do they have that's going to cover the #1 WR each week, Springs...?
How do I see him gone, question should be how can you see him coming back??
The latest word is both sides are still far apart on $$ and just going by what Gibbs has said, it really sounds like the Skins are going to play hardball with Smoot and aren't going to give him a penny more than they are offering.
Smoot is looking for a bonus in the range of $14M, the Skins are reportedly offering around $10M, that's a significant gap.
Smoot is looking for big time money and I don't blame him, but the team can't afford to tie up mega bucks at the corner position, not when other key guys need to be re-signed as well like Pierce.
My gut feeling is the decision has been made to start Harris next year along with Springs. Williams really likes the younger guys too like Wilds, and perhaps they'll pick up a cheap free agent corner to back up Harris.

Tim Hasselbeck QB ERFA Redskins
- stays...he's entrenched as #3, and most likely won't garner any attention from the rest of the league
Andre Lott DB ERFA Redskins
- with the coming out party of Ryan Clark, he may be the odd man out in the secondary
John Simon RB ERFA Redskins
- will be between him and rock to see who stays...since Antonio Brown is most likely here to stay as backup returner, Simon could be the odd man out.
Ron Warner DL ERFA Redskins
- can't see him leaving. did very well last year in a reserve role.
Pat Dennis DB RFA Redskins
- special teamer, dont see getting any attention from the league
Demetric Evans DL RFA Redskins
- another reserve that could crack the starting lineup, here to stay, but could get some attention from the league
Todd Franz DB RFA Redskins
- i hate this guy, yet we never seem to get rid of him...
Lemar Marshall LB RFA Redskins
- will get attention from the league, but will stay
Antonio Pierce LB RFA Redskins
- should resign
Fred Smoot DB RFA Redskins
- hope to resign but money will become an issue, and the dreaded franchise tag will be applied if need be
Ray Brown OL UFA Redskins
- great backup he will make in '05
Rock Cartwright RB UFA Redskins
- great special teamer, but doesn't fit into the grand scheme of things...most likely gone
Chris Clemons LB UFA Redskins
- here to stay...
Kenyatta Jones OL UFA Redskins
- i as well thought he was gone...would make a decent backup
Brian Kozlowski TE UFA Redskins
- won't garner much attention, will resign with Skins cheap
Joe Salave'a DL UFA Redskins
- should be resigned, great reserve
Michael Sellers TE UFA Redskins
- ups and downs...might get some attention from league, will most likely be resigned

how bad a salary cap hit do the skins take if they cut chad morton?he has'nt shown me shit the last two years.it's like the great return man never showed up.
Morton has a 5-year deal with a signing bonus of $2.5M, I know the 4th and 5th years are voidable and I think there's some sort of roster bonus in there somewhere.
Crazy Canuck might want to step in here, I'm not sure if the bonus is spread out over the entire 5 years or just the first 3 before the voidable years.
