From ESPN: Gardner Allowed to Seek Trade

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=1978715

I like the fact that the Redskins are asking for a 2nd round pick, do you think they'll get it?

If they do get a 2nd I think it'll be a very low second rounder, almost a 3rd.

I think they're asking for a 2nd as a starting point, figuring they might get a 3rd when all is said and done.

Doubt we'll get it. Wonder what's gonna happen when no one bites?

I would bet my life we only get a very, very low 2nd rounder (i.e. from the Chargers) or we get a high 3rd rounder.

I'm not so much worried about Gardner's trade value as I am about Smoot's situation. If we let this guy go without any compensation (because we can't afford to tag him), I'll be livid. We should be able to get a very high second rounder for Smoot.

If we packaged our 3rd rounder (9th in the third round) and a second round pick we'd get for Smoot, we'd be able to get a low 1st round pick. That would leave us with the 9th overall pick, another first round pick, a 3rd rounder, a 4th rounder, and a pick in the sixth and seventh rounds.

We'd definately be able to draft a top notch wideout (like Braylon Edwards, Mike Williams, or Troy Williamson - who many feel will watch his his stock skyrocket after the combine), a solid starting defensive end or tackle, and some other quality players.

With that kind of draft, a new center (i.e. the mauling Titans' center Hartwig), and a new blocking tight end, our roster would be so, so sweet.

My revised ideal 2005 starting roster:

QB- Ramsey
HB- Portis
H-back- Cooley
LT- Samuels
LG- Dockery
C- Hartwig (via free agency)
RG- Thomas
RT- Jansen
TE- ??? (offseason acquisition)
WR- Coles
WR- Williams (via first draft pick)

RE- ???
DT- Griffin
DT- Noble
LE- Wynn
OLB- Arrington
OLB- Washington
MLB- Pierce
CB- Springs
CB- Harris
FS- Taylor
SS- Bowen/Lott/Clark

Interesting you mention the Chargers RF. With Marty there it seems like a possible destination for both Gardner and Smoot. I wonder if maybe packaging them together is a possibility

if someone will give up a 2nd rounder for AJ feeley, someone will give up a 2nd rounder for gardner. hes actually done a little something in his career.

I can't get rid of Gardner fast enough, I don't see a team giving up their only second rd pick for him, they could offer a second if a team has multiple 2nd rd pick's his salary might make it possible, San Diego is a definent possibility, I could see Gruden going after him as well we would be sitting pretty come draft day if we could manage a 2nd for him but my guess will be more like a 3rd. If Smoot want's to break the bank then I say we get a late first for him if we can't get that much for him then he obviously isn't worth the asking price, as well I just feel Smoot is overestimating himself and not just to us he will find out if he seek's a deal else where that the offer's aren't near what he want's. If he stay's great, but if he goes we should be able to get a late first for him, that would give us a lot of ammo for the up coming draft.

a think a team that is lacking a big play receiver might pick up gardner, because as sketchy as he is dependability-wise, he can still make big plays when given the chance. I say the Chargers would likely give up a second rounder for him.

we are not going to get anything for smoot. the skins arent going to Ftag him.

i think gardner will get traded to atlanta. if he does, he will be a 1200yrd receiver next year.

but thats just my opinion.

i think its a bad idea to draft a WR. the skins need an Olineman and a 2 defensive ends.

there are no clear choice blue chip WR in this years draft. they all have major faults.

Mike WIlliams is a terrible choice at the 9 spot. williams is alot like keyshon johnson, a big solid SLOW possesion receiver. remember keyshon was drafted 1st overall by the jets out of usc. is isnt worth the first overall pick or even a 9th. williams wont be able to get seperation down field. not a great talent if you ask me.

if you want a possesion receiver, start McCants. he has proven he can play(well atleast in the redzone).

if you want a potential playmaker, start jacobs. he seems to have alot of talent.

lets not forget about thrash, he is solid as a #2 wr.
plus, all those guys are getting paid regardless and we dont use a pick on them.

I agree we have effectivly drafted a WR with our top picks so many times in the last few years Gardner, Coles and Taylor. We have other needs I would rather trade down and pick up a DE like Pollock or Spears. We have not spent a pick on the DL for too long and need some real tallent there . Williams schems have disgised the weakness before but opposing teams have a year load of tapes to disect those schemes .

As for Gardner I think we will struggle to get a good third simply because I don't think their are enough teams with the need for a solid No.2 ... Only the Chargers and Bucs seem to be in the frame right now.
