I am confident that Snyder will whip out the checkbook and find someone comparable to replace him.
Why would Snyder whip out the checkbook for a veteran or someone comparable to replace him instead of just resigning Smoot?

Think about it any top CB that is an UFA will want just as much or more than what Smoot wants. You think that Charles Woodson, S. Rolle, A. Dyson, or any of the Miami Dolphins CB's will want less than what Smoot is asking? If any thing Smoot is probably the cheaper one out of the group. To me it would make no sence to let Smoot go and then sign someone else for about the same price or higher.

If Smoot leaves, in all honesty I dont want to bring in a big name guy. I would say draft a guy, or maybe we already have his replacement on our team? if we have to dish out a ton of cash, I would rather just do it on Smoot himself.

I really don't think we'll look to sign a big name CB if Smoot leaves. I think the plan will be to plug in Harris and continue to develop the youngsters behind him, and probably look to pick up a CB via the draft in the later rounds.

Garnell Wilds showed some promise. I mean, if Williams trusts him 1 on 1 vs Moss, he must have plenty of talent!

Unlike most years, this offseason there are several high-quality free agent corners on the market. If Smoot leaves, and we don't draft a corner with a high pick, I don't see how the Skins can pass up signing one of those guys. In the event Smoot decides not to re-sign, we will franchise him and try to get a draft pick in return for him. The likelihood of getting a great deal in return for Smoot is low, considering the aforementioned number of quality corners that will be looking for new teams. The best we will get will be a mid-range first rounder, and assuming that's what we get, we SHOULD spend one of our first round selections on a corner. If we don't I think it is imperative that we pick up a solid corner via free agency.

As for the amount we would have to pay a free agent relative to the amount we would have to pay Smoot, you may be right Redskins8588, the numbers might not be much different. But one glaring trend that has remained consistent since free agency began has been the fact that free agents usually look to score fat signing bonuses from their new teams. Players that are looking to re-sign with a team are not as inclined to seek the same type of signing bonus. Given Snyder's track record with shelling out bonuses, I have to like our chances of attracting one of the top free agent corners.

Once again, I think the best option is to keep Smoot. If that doesn't happen, we should trade him for a pick and select a corner in the top 20. If that fails, then I would expect another Springs-like player in Washington next year.
