rypper11 11-28-2011, 01:05 PM Let me start by stating that I no longer live in the Redskins radio broadcast area. I did grow up with Frank (gone) Sonny, and Sam and occasionally hear snippets of the current incarnation. IMO they are no where near their glory days. That said, even Sam's dementia doesn't drop them below the majority of local broadcasters. I listen to a lot traveling and wanted to get other's opinions on the worst, best and who should supplant the current Redskin lineup.
My worst is the Panthers. They are quiet during the play and then discuss it as if the radio (non-viewing) audience could believe what they saw. Sample from the Colts-Panthers game:
"Wow, did you see that."
"Was he in?"
"I think so. Um, don't know. Is there a replay? Look at the screen."
"Yeah, I don't know. Worst case they still can stop them."
"I think we got it. What did the ref signal?"
"Ummmmm..."
Play by play guy "The interception stands and the Panthers just have to kneel on the 20 yard line. No review is under way."
Best is the Broncos. Brian Griese is great at offering commentary and his partner (don't remember his name) tells the action without offering references nobody cares about.
irish 11-28-2011, 01:18 PM I was in the car and listened a good bit to the Coyboys game and I have to say the current broadcast team is terrible. They need to get rid of Sam Huff ASAP because he's the terrible and mis-speaks all the time, it really brings the whole broadcast down. I guess other cities broadcast teams might be worse but I find it hard to believe.
skinsfan69 11-28-2011, 01:31 PM Yeah Huff is just brutal to listen to. He's lost his mind and forgets things. It's kind of sad that they keep letting him do the games. The main issue I have with Larry Michael is his god awful voice. It's beyond annoying. I still like Sonny but the other two are just un listenable. Frank Herzog was awesome. Can't tell you about the other cities.
Sonny & Sam are awful and should have retired years ago.
I stick with the national feeds whenever possible. Something about the "hometown" radio crews sitting their openly rooting for their team just irks me.
CRedskinsRule 11-28-2011, 01:58 PM I like Sonny, but Huff is really unbearable. You can hear the frustration in Sonny and the other guy's voice when Huff blurts some incredibly wrong statement out. In the SF game Huff was raving about how the defense was playing the best he'd seen in years, until Sonny pointed out that Huff was talking about SF's defense not ours.
Usually on Sirius you get all 3 feeds, I rarely listen to the Skins it is just too awful.
freddyg12 11-28-2011, 01:59 PM Sonny & Sam are a comedy team! I know what yall are saying, they should've hung it up years ago. Still, their presence means something to me, I'll be sad when they're gone, they're part of old DC.

I dont mind the hometown radio crew openly rooting for their team because they are employed by that team so I expect them to be biased but the national feeds are best.

This is exactly how i feel. You cant take Sonny and especially Sam as serious color guys.
Redskins Nation is probably the worst Redskins show out there, but i think Larry Micheals is a damn fine play by play guy. I think hes one of the best in radio when it comes to calling a game and painting a picture of what’s happening. I dont mind Sam and Sonny (and even like their antics) but you have to take it for what it is. They are funny and entertaining, not serious and insightful.
Monday night football is a good comparison to Larry, Sonny and Sam. I thought Denis Miller was horrible. I thought Tony Kornhizer was somehow even worse. And I didn’t think either of them knew much about football, but some people think they are entertaining and funny and that’s why ESPN decided that 2 people talking wasn’t enough and put them in the booth.
Currently I think Jaws is okay and I kind of like Gurdon, but they can both be pretty damn annoying at times. I see Sonny and Sam the same way but rarely if ever annoying. Sonny can lay some insightful stuff every now and then. Sam is pretty crazy (senile) but will usually make you laugh a few times each game (normally at his expense). But best of all neither of them talk too much (unlike Miller, Kornhizer, Jaws, and Gurdon). Either way both Larry Micheals and Mike Tirico do a great job of putting up with their color guys for 4 hours each Sunday/Monday while calling a damn fine game.
I just don’t get people who try and take Sam and Sonny serious, it would be like critiquing Tony Kornhizer for going off topic and making jokes; that’s whats he’s there to do.
LOVE the whole team..
Larry is a good play by play man and a terrific Redskin homer..Sonny is still great and ..Sam...
His dementia labored outbursts actually make me laugh out loud often as Sonny and Larry frequently tease him.

I used to be a Kornheiser fan until he went to MNF. Dude was such a crybaby when people criticized him, it was pretty pathetic.
