Just a rumor but here is the quote from http://www.collegehumor.com/
-After 15 consecutive years of putting out games, the John Madden video game franchise is taking a year off. There will be no Madden NFL 2006. With EA Sports acquiring the exclusive NFL game license (and in effect knocking out virtually any competition) it will take an extra year off for research and development and completely revamp the game for a big re-release for 2007.

I'd heard that they were dropping the Madden moniker, and just going with EA Sports NFL as the title, but I hadn't heard that they were going on hiatus for a couple years.
There's at least one person working on the 2006 version, anyway:

I have the new issue of electronic gaming monthly and they briefly talk about Madden '06 for the next generation consoles, and in the review of NFL street they also mention that in Madden '06 you'll be able to import your created players from street to Madden.

Why drop the Madden name? That's gold.

cuz when madden dies, then it would be weird having him commentate and stuff when he is dead. you know.

Nah.
Divine intervention.

NFL Street looks horrible.
Everything I've read about it gives it good reviews, and the first one got good reviews too.
I kinda agree with you though, I guess I'm just too hooked on a football sim type of game like Madden.
I do like NBA street though, but the NFL one just doesn't look appealing to me.
