John Beck Era BeginsSFREDSKIN 10-19-2011, 11:38 AM Good move, I think Beck will have a few bumps on the road, but will be better overall. freddyg12 10-19-2011, 11:39 AM I wonder how much Becks mobility and the injuries along the Oline figured in this decision? I think regardless of the o line, even if the o line was the best in the nfl, Beck's mobility & speed are a big advantage over Rex. It's not just Rex's lack of scrambling ability, he doesn't move well in the pocket. You can have the best pass blocking line, your qb will still get some pressure & need to move. e.g. NE, you still see Brady move his feet in the pocket and adjust even when blocking is good. Rex also has a slow release. Like this move, not expecting Beck to win games for us w/30+ throws a game, just want to see him make enough plays & reduce TOs & we'll be at least avg. mlmpetert 10-19-2011, 12:02 PM Just out of curiosity what would you consider as Rex's strengths? I am not being snarky or sarcastic here, serious question. Yeah i was wondering the same thing when i was originally typing my comment.... But i do think Rex is good at somethings. He gets the ball off very quick and spreads it around well. I also think hes fairly acurate within 15 yards. What makes him so bad in my opinion is the fact that you can count on him making extremely horrible decisions when given the opportunity. He also has very bad "pocket presence" combined with poor ball security. He is also bad at reading and throwing into zones. I personally think that while he likes playing football games he isn’t passionate about the sport, which can be okay for some skill positions (WR, Art Monk) but not for the QB position. I guess im more saying that he was being forced to do things that we all knew he was bad at, rather than relying solely on his capabilities. SkinzWin 10-19-2011, 12:03 PM Interesting the different QB decisions The Genius Shanahan Brain Trust has made since they've been here: 1) Decides not to re-sign Campbell 2) Trades a 2nd round pick (and another pick, I forget which round) for Donovan McNabb 3) Trades for John Beck 4) Signs Rex Grossman 5) Benches Donovan McNabb (then has a disastrous presser explaining why) 6) Starts Rex Grossman the remainder of 2010 7) Trades Donovan McNabb for a side of rice pilaf 8) Praises John Beck in the offseason like he's God's gift (Kyle wanted him 10th overall in Houston, etc etc) 9) Starts Rex Grossman after an open competition in camp 10) Benches Rex Grossman 5 weeks into the season (I agree with this decision wholeheartedly) 11) Names John Beck the starter. WHEW!! Let's hope he starts hitting on some of his quarterback decisions. McNabb was a miss on his part. But a gamble a lot of people would have taken regardless. Everything else I believe is what was out there that we could get. As I always say, Rome wasn't built in a day. (History teacher in me) They have been upgrading other positions of need because they didn't see any FA qb's or draftees that they liked. No point in getting someone big in FA, or betting the farm in the draft just for the sake of getting a big name qb. I mean come on, who do you think these guys are? Vinny?!? Watch Shanny draft a 1st round QB talent in the draft he likes this year and it will be different, I guarantee you. PS: I think Beck will be better than Grossman to the effect of Beck not necessarily being a much better QB than Grossman, but that he is more of a game manager than a risk taker. He won't turn the ball over as much as Rex . Make the throws he needs to make and let the running game and defense win games. Just like what the Jets did with Sanchez going to the AFC title game. However, with our offensive line injuries, I think that line of thinking could be threatened and we take steps back unfortunately. I hope these back up guys can step up. mredskins 10-19-2011, 12:08 PM Interesting the different QB decisions The Genius Shanahan Brain Trust has made since they've been here: 1) Decides not to re-sign Campbell 2) Trades a 2nd round pick (and another pick, I forget which round) for Donovan McNabb 3) Trades for John Beck 4) Signs Rex Grossman 5) Benches Donovan McNabb (then has a disastrous presser explaining why) 6) Starts Rex Grossman the remainder of 2010 7) Trades Donovan McNabb for a side of rice pilaf 8) Praises John Beck in the offseason like he's God's gift (Kyle wanted him 10th overall in Houston, etc etc) 9) Starts Rex Grossman after an open competition in camp 10) Benches Rex Grossman 5 weeks into the season (I agree with this decision wholeheartedly) 11) Names John Beck the starter. I think that speaks more to the difficulty it is to find that true number one then it does MS inability to find the right guy. If you go back to each number you listed and erase hindsight you would probably agree that was the best move at the time. I mean you are even saying at #10 this is his best move right now with what he has; two weeks down the road it may look like the dumbest move ever. Lotus 10-19-2011, 12:13 PM Would have been nice for us if McNabb wasn't benched yet Good point. Maybe Ponder will get hurt, giving DMac more starts. pg86 10-19-2011, 12:14 PM Interesting the different QB decisions The Genius Shanahan Brain Trust has made since they've been here: 1) Decides not to re-sign Campbell 2) Trades a 2nd round pick (and another pick, I forget which round) for Donovan McNabb 3) Trades for John Beck 4) Signs Rex Grossman 5) Benches Donovan McNabb (then has a disastrous presser explaining why) 6) Starts Rex Grossman the remainder of 2010 7) Trades Donovan McNabb for a side of rice pilaf 8) Praises John Beck in the offseason like he's God's gift (Kyle wanted him 10th overall in Houston, etc etc) 9) Starts Rex Grossman after an open competition in camp 10) Benches Rex Grossman 5 weeks into the season (I agree with this decision wholeheartedly) 11) Names John Beck the starter. Washington Redskins to start John Beck at QB - ESPN (http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7122213/washington-redskins-start-john-beck-qb-source-says) preach on Herm Also third times a charm maybe he got it right this time with the QB Jontrem 10-19-2011, 12:21 PM Yeah i was wondering the same thing when i was originally typing my comment.... Haha ok so I will agree with spreading it around and being accurate within 15 yards. However the negatives have always outweighed the positives with him and I agree and think that KS was asking too much out of him. backrow 10-19-2011, 12:22 PM Interesting the different QB decisions The Genius Shanahan Brain Trust has made since they've been here: 1) Decides not to re-sign Campbell 2) Trades a 2nd round pick (and another pick, I forget which round) for Donovan McNabb3) Trades for John Beck 4) Signs Rex Grossman 5) Benches Donovan McNabb (then has a disastrous presser explaining why) 6) Starts Rex Grossman the remainder of 2010 7) Trades Donovan McNabb for a side of rice pilaf 8) Praises John Beck in the offseason like he's God's gift (Kyle wanted him 10th overall in Houston, etc etc) 9) Starts Rex Grossman after an open competition in camp 10) Benches Rex Grossman 5 weeks into the season (I agree with this decision wholeheartedly) 11) Names John Beck the starter. WHEW!! Let's hope he starts hitting on some of his quarterback decisions. I think you are missing the very 1st decision, and it was from that one that every other decision followed. The 1st decision was that the rest of the team could not sustain a raw qb's growth. Thus, his actions all were predicated on building a fundamentally sound team where he could draft his guy, and have him have success. From that, the only questionable decision was getting rid of Campbell, but I have already said that, atleast in my opinion, that was simply moving a guy to clear out past history, so when he does bring in his guy, there are no divided loyalties. |
